Very good, but incomplete

One one hand, this is, AFAIK, a good overview of the literature at the time, and explains the tricky gotchas in this analysis.

On the other hand, it requires more trust than I could give, as it omitted small but crucial details about the experiments covered, such as how each different experimenter defined "morality". I thought his inverted-U curve for eminence = f(education) was explained by eminence being inversely correlated with birth year, and education being positively correlated with birth year, but consulting the original paper showed he controlled for that. One sentence would've saved me 20 minutes of checking.

Most critically, he never mentioned any studies investigating or even factoring out the correlation between wealth or social class and "genius" / eminence. This is almost certainly the #1 factor, so spending a career on the topic without investigating it is very strange.

As an addendum, my own studies of scientific eminence indicate that everything changed around 1970. At that time, family wealth became indispensable in becoming a prominent scientist, owing to the combination of the skyrocketing cost of elite schools, the disappearance of scholarships to them, and the response by grad schools, grant review committtees, & search committees to the flood of new graduates of simply discarding applications from anybody who was not from an elite school. I don't recall that this book looks at any data from after 1970.

Amazing!

This book will revolutionise any misconceptions about food, diet and digestion and enlighten many to the cause and remedy of disease.Its concepts are well laid out, very readable, very practical, authorative and easy to apply. I am curently studying Naturopathy and find it a valuable reference for study and personal application, it is so well communicated and not lacking in authentic up to date clinical and scientific validation of principles vital to 'nature cure'. It presents a modern holistic system of approaching clinical nutrition. It is truelly a fundamental first volume.

Important Read For Everyone

Dr. Loomis explains how we slow down producing digestive enzymes as we age. Unless you live on a farm and eat your food out of the field, food doesn't give you what you need to digest carbs, fats and proteins. I have since started Loomis enzymes and they have helped me with digestion. This is a very informative book that explains the whole process of digestion and what you need to know to stay healthy.

Fantastic, easy to understand book. It puts digestion in a whole new light. The text was easy to read, diagrams were helpful, lists are easy to find, and the overall feel of the book is top notch.

Scarce book about some beautiful climbs and wilderness areas

This book is out of print but about the only guide book that covers this area. I used to do an annual trip to Bart Dome for a three day easy backpack trip and we'd backpack in (3-4hrs) then climb two 1/2 days and one full day. Some climbs you could belay from your sleeping bag and there's a spring about 100-150ft from the rock, it is a beautiful isolated piece of wilderness, great for a group of up to about 16 climbers. The author Greg and I used to co-lead this annual trip. We'd leave a double rope top rope set up on a 5.9 route and at night (no lights allowed) would race up it and see who could climb it the fastest. At about midnight a zillion huge millipedes covered the rock and it would startle you when you grabbed one of them thinking it was a hand hold, or your foot would slip if you squished one with your foot... wheeeeeee! Ran into Allen Steck (co-author, 50 Classic Climbs) one trip at Bart. He was very lucky as the day before on the route he climbed, I led a pitch that had no anchor yet so I ran out of rope and had to downclimb 50ft with no pro, bring up Greg so he could install the anchors and then we could finish the climb.

Easter weekend we'd lead a trip to where else... Easter Wall. We'd run into a huge rattlesnake each year there... Good times. Climbers looking for areas for 1st ascents might want to check out this book as there's plenty of new route potential in some of the areas. Okay, it's not the best, most detailed guide book, but it's the only book to this lightly visited area.

Hard to find climbs

Overall a good book of an area without a lot of info. Better photos w/ route overlays or more topos would be useful. Although the idea of keeping more adventure in climbing and thus finding your own way as outlined in the intro is nice to find in a guidebook.

A GREAT book!

I thought this was a great book. It's based on the movie "Switching Goals", starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The movie plot is about twin sisters switching places in order to get what they want. They switch places at soccer practice because they don't like their own soccer teams. If you've seen the movie, then you'd know what I'm talking about, but if you haven't seen the movie yet, this book is a great way to know what the movie is about with out actually seeing it. Some parts in the book are different from the movie but that's OK because then it makes the story better and original. This is a great book and I recommend you read it. You don't have to be a fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley's to enjoy this book!

Sam is a soccer jock always wining at sports while Emma likes boys and cool clothes. When there dad gets them in a soccer team both girls do not like it ! Sam is with a team who are lazy and carefree, while Emma is with there dad trying to get soccer right. The girls switch there places, a boy asks sam out on a date thinking Sams Emma, so it works out, Sam dates as Emma, while Emma plays soccer as sam. Intill there mom finds out !

This great book is about two little girls, Sam and Emma, Sam is the sporty one, who loves football and soccer, Emma is the princess who loves boys and make-up. When their dad gets them both into soccer teams, they swich places, and are very happy untill ther mother fins out! In the end, Emma proves she can also be good at sports and Sam gets a boyfriend, and they both are great soccer players!

Great Book For Learning About Art Techniques and Mediums as an Adult

So, how do you become the one who did?

Mel Elliot seeks to show you how. This isn't a book that teaches you how to draw, this is a book that teaches you how to see like an artist. I think this is the perfect book for adults who are looking to teach themselves how to art. With her wit and good natured humor, Elliot creates a leg for you to stand on in the art world. By following the exercised and trying out all the challenges she presents (such as a 13 question quiz about you, and exposing you to different mediums) this book helps introduce you to your inner artist. Each chapter comes with a seemingly easy exercise to help get your creative juices flowing. At the end of the book you will have quite the repertoire of work. The exercises are so simple and easy to make your own. I recommend taking a full day to up to a week between chapters to really let each lesson sink in. This book is full of great tips to help bring out the artist we all have inside ourselves.

I am currently fascinated with hand lettering. There is a chapter in here about that, as well as steps you can take to up your game. This book has really helped me to be more confident in my creations as well as more eager to try new things. Along with finding your artistic voice, this book contains the foundations of basic art classes you would have taken in high school. So it's like a refresher course, except it has more modern medium and techniques. Elliot exposes the reader to endless artistic possibilities and techniques. It's a great stepping stone into deeper reading (which she provides artists to look into with each new technique she introduces) if you find something you simply must try.

This book is so much fun. Start off by answering questions to get yourself inspired, like "What is your favorite film?" This book not only motivates you, but makes you think outside the box: different mediums, looking at things you overlook every day, less is more, etc. A great read for any creative mind.

The title accurately reflects the content of the book. It is a good source for understanding and addressing literary and theological issues/discussions in the Gospel of John. The author critically and theologically examines the text from a Christian perspective.

I would have preferred footnotes over parenthetical, it tended to interrupt the flow (frequent parenthetical citations). Structural clarity was also lacking - verse correspondence with the gospel of John was not marked structurally making it a less efficient reference material. Overall, it is a good book with a few deficiencies.

Solid, but not in depth

Overall, "Reading John" is a solid commentary, although it is not a verse by verse commentary. Rather, the book deals with themes and concepts and does a fine job cross-referencing them throughout the Gospel and Letters of John.

The author spent several pages at the beginning arguing for his preferred chronology of the four texts. While the brief historic overview was insightful, the author does not make a convincing case as to why his (or any other orderings) really matters in regards to the text and interpretation of the text.

Excellent introduction for the novice

This book (4th Edition) answered the questions I had about networking my small business. Specifically, I needed to know: 1) should I use a peer-to-peer or a client/server LAN, 2) if client/server, should the server be dedicated as a server or could the server also be used as a workstation, 3) which operating system would be most appropriate for the clients or peers, 4) which network operationing system would be most appropriate for a server, 5) is the installation of the network within my scope.
Before buying the book I had searched the Web in vain (both computing-specific sites and search engines) looking for answers to these questions. This book provided the information I needed to answer all five questions. The information is very product specific (eg, Novell NetWare can be difficult to install and the complication and expense is not justified for a five-user network; a peer-to-peer LAN is easy to set up with Win95 or Win98; PCI network cards are much easier to configure than the older styles). The book is well written (ie, easy to read, to-the-point, relevant).
If you decide to install a peer-to-peer LAN with Win98, this is probably the only book you will need. If you decide to install a client/server LAN with a network operating system (NOS) such as NetWare or NT Server, you will probably need a book specific to those systems for installation and maintenance (there are Dummy books for both systems - which I haven't yet read). If you don't know which NOS to use, this book can help you decide.

Definately for beginners

Not a bad book, but it is VERY basic. If you have worked with a network before, there is little information you can glean from this text. For someone who knows little about networks, or computers as a whole, this may be a good purchase. Do not, however, expect this book to teach you everything you need to know about working with a network. It is very simple, which makes the topics easy to understand, but expect to get another book centering on your particular network if you plan to do some serious networking. I would, however, recommend this book to newbies in networking as it goes over terms and concepts that everyone must know.

Gives you all the basics on computer networks + some extras

Who this book is for: This book is intended to help the absolute beginner in computer networking get a basic overview of the issues and terminology involved. It is well-written and contains some of the typical "dummies"-humor helping to keep the text easily digestable.
What this book is NOT: A how-to manual that will get your network going if you're sitting in front of a screen clueless on a Sunday morning. That said: after reading this book you won't be clueless any more.
On to the detailed contents. The book is divided into six parts:
Part I: The absolute basics
No further info necessary: How to open up your computer, so that you can install a networking card, for example.
Part II: Building your own network
Planning you network; making basic choices of e.g cabling etc.
Part III: Network management for dummies
Basic network management: making backups, taking care of security
Part IV: Webifying your network
Creating the connection to the internet; creating websites
Part V: More ways to network
Miscelaneous, like: networking your home, dial-in networks and non-standard hard-/software (MacIntosh; Linux etc.)
Part VI: The part of tens
A number of top-ten lists, partially amusing, partially useless
As I wrote: the book is really good in helping you to obtain an overview of the types of networks that exist and the different terminologies/choices involved. Once you have made a decision that you will need/want to create a network involving operating system X running on computers of type y, you will probably need to get another, more specific book to help you dig deeper.

This is a fantastic presentation about training with power with one exception. The Book/Font size does not support the detail in the charts. Even with a magnifying glass I could not discern the detail. This book should be repackaged in a way that supports the veiwing detail in the charts since this comprises of much of the material presented

This is great book for an introduction to training with a power meter. Discusses specific power meters and the pros/cons of each. Then gives a good start to power and lot's of examples on how to use the power data and what it all means. I will be referring to this book often as I train.

O no Yasumaro (d. 723) was a nobleman of the Japanese court whose O clan ruled over an area bearing the same name near the eighth-century capital of Nara.

Gustav Heldt is an associate professor of Japanese literature at the University of Virginia and the author of The Pursuit of Harmony: Poetry and Power in Early Heian Japan.

Best Edition for the Common Reader

This review is for Heldt's edition, which is the most affordable modern translation of the Kojiki. This translation is very readable to a modern audience, and although I do not read Japanese, I've read scholarly reviews praising Heldt's accuracy. I do have two major issues with this edition. The first is Heldt's insistence in translating the names of characters and places. It makes it very difficult to keep track of who is who, and where events are taking place. I lived a year in Japan and I couldn't tell you where most of the stories in the Kojiki took place from this edition because instead of saying "They went to Izumo" Heldt gives us "They went to Bellowing Clouds". Likewise I cannot cross reference anything concerning characters because their Japanese names are not used. My second issue was Heldt's decision to not include notes on the text (foot or end notes). He does include a glossary of personal and place names, but these are listed exclusively under Heldt's translated names (and these translations are exclusively his own, not a scholarly consensus). This again makes cross referencing very difficult. Ultimately this edition is best for someone who is only interested in reading the stories of the Kojiki and necessarily looking to learn much about the politics and such behind the text.

As for the Kojiki itself, I found it to be rather disappointing. It does contain some stories of the Shinto Kami early on, but more than anything this is an inflated genealogical text establishing the tradition of the Japanese Imperial family. I found few of the stories to be exciting. The only tale I found to be emotionally engaging at all was that of Yamato-takeru (here called Yamato Brave). Certain sections of the Kojiki literally just list an emperor's name, their consorts, their offsprings, and the years they reigned. I would only recommend the Kojiki to someone who is really curious about the earliest story of Shinto Kami or with an interest in the establishment of the tradition of the a Japanese Imperial family. If you really want to read the Kojiki and don't want to pay tons of money for a more scholarly developed edition, then this is the one to get.

A Kojiki for the English speaking world

Heldt has chosen a radical approach that brings out the landscape of ancient Japan, offering translations of places and kami names. His translation that approaches the appeal of the original for Japanese readers; a major reason the Kojiki is widely read today in Japan is precisely because of the kind of poetic appeal that Heldt tries to emphasize in his translation. Readers should be warned that this is a VERY different philosophy from the Philippi translation and they should acquire that one if they want "reconstructed ancient phonology", which Heldt is opposed to on principle. But this translation is far superior to the Chamberlain edition that is widely available online.

A lovely read for anyone who enjoys mythology and history, and where they intertwine. A a stylistic choice, I almost wish the translation used footnotes for names as oppossed to their direct translations, but you quickly get past it.

Beautifully bound, designed, translated and presented. A real treat.

Good touring information

This book is full of good information for the novice trike rider. It could save a lot of grief for anyone just starting out. The only downside is that it is concerned too much with his personal beliefs about life and what we should eat.

Sir if I wanted a lesson in philosophy or physiology I would purchase textbooks.
Also when commenting on the measurement systems of other countries, please research to make sure they are accurate;(Australia went decimal in late 60's),
Nice 15 pages on trike touring though!

EXTREME EGOTISTICAL PROPOGANDA

This book is extremely egotistical propaganda and even with this in mind, he talks out of both sides of his mouth. He lambasts those who use gasoline powered vehicles (except his friends and family) but at the end of the book he rents one plus depends of others who have one. He also is against anyone who is not a vegan even though he admits to using fish byproducts several times a day plus each tuna and salmon when riding.

He claims to have all the answers to long distance bike riding and anyone who does not follow his ideas is just wrong....from the type bike to type camping gear...plus he has only gone about 900 miles twice.

All of this propaganda takes up well over 1/2 the book.

On the other hand, most of his suggestions are right on it taken for what they are worth
