Castaway Dreams, by Darlene Marshall

(Romance / Historical Romance) 2013 Aspen Gold Award--Historical RomanceAfter a lifetime in the Royal Navy, surgeon Alexander Murray knows one cannot exist without a brain, yet Daphne Farnham may be the exception. Her head contains nothing but rainbows, shoes, bonnets, pink frills and butterflies. Even her fluffy dog is useless. But the war with Napoleon is finally over and Alexander is sure he can put up with the cloth-headed Miss Farnham only for a couple of months until they reach England. Did that naval officer have his sense of humor surgically removed? It is bad enough Alexander has no fashion sensibilities, never smiles at Daphne like other men do and doesn't adore her darling pup Pompom. He had the gall to proclaim her 'useless' when everyone knows it's Daphne who's the best at picking out just the right ensemble for any social occasion. Fortunately, she has to put up with the sour Scotsman only for a couple of months until they reach England. But when their ship goes down, the dour doctor (after a fashion), the dizzy damsel (more or less) and the darling (and potentially delicious) doggy are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as unlikely companions, castaway on a desert island. One of them may have fleas, but it's the two humans who will find themselves wanting to scratch a certain itch.

I encourage you all to try this author's voice. (She has a great backlist, too.)."-- USA Today Books"A +--Favorite Romance, 2012--Castaway Dreams is ridiculously adorable and pretty damned close to flawless. fantastic
By Amazon Customer
I won't sum up the plot since it's been done already. I want to say that this was a very moving and emotional novel, quite funny at times with plenty of adventure and chemistry between the H/h. I adored both characters, both the grumpy but very human doctor and the (supposedly) ditzy Daphne. She wasn't dumb at all really. She had never been challenged, nothing had ever been expected of her but to choose what hats and shoes went with which outfit. But we gradually are shown (love good writing like this where we are shown who a character is, not told) what kind of person she is. Brave, loyal, (wait til you see how she got Pompom) and with a huge curiosity about the world. She is a natural optimist and not whiny at all. She is vulnerable but not at all annoying, just human and wanting to be loved for who she is. I haven't liked a heroine this much in a long time. I usually would choose an author by how a hero was written (and don't get me wrong, I loved the good surgeon here, looooved him) but I truly like Daphne. I am going to be reading this author's backlist pronto!

Fun story. A good swashbuckling high-seas romance with a good dose of 'rogering'
By Karlyn
This was a fun, sexy, over-the-top high seas adventure with pirates, good guys, and even a castaway Island. I forgot how much fun these type of historicals can be to read.

Alexander is a surgeon on board a ship bound for England when the captain asks him to keep a watchful eye on the only other passenger: Daphne, a young but oh-so-naive beauty and heiress. She's a ripe target for wayword men, and far too young for the old surgeon.

Problem is Alexander isn't that old at age 35, he just looks older thanks to a shabby wardrobe and some premature graying hair. But underneath the clothes and hair is the body of a young healthy man with desires for a beautiful woman. And Daphne turns out not to be all that naive, and at 25 she might be the woman for him if only they weren't from two different worlds.

Trouble abounds these two throughout their journey, and it's one adventure after another. The romance starts off as a physical attraction, but soon becomes a much deeper. Alexander knows he must resist her, but when Daphne puts her mind to winning this mans heart he doesn't stand a chance.

My only niggle with the story was at times it felt more of a father & child relationship as these two communicated at such different intellectual levels, but they do find common ground and the relationship does become more equally matched. Daphne's lack of smarts is tested over and over, and at times even I found myself asking if she could really be that clueless. At first they seemed like two of the most mismatched H/h in fiction, with their relationship being so one sided and their intellectual level so far apart. I'm not sure how much I liked her as a heroine, but she did provide some good laughs.

This is an over-the-top story so be prepared for some contrived plot devices and eye rolling dialogue, but if you're like me you really won't mind them. If you like a good swashbuckling high seas romance with a good dose of 'rogering', you'll want to read this one.

Castaway your cares with this Regency adventure!
By Kim Adams
"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."
' Marilyn Monroe

Darlene Marshall delivers a delectable treat with CASTAWAY DREAMS - mismatched travelers find unexpected love on the high seas. Much like a Marilyn Monroe movie, CASTAWAY DREAMS is a humorous read with a "serious" Naval surgeon, a not so serious beauty, and an unexpected love affair that even Ms. Monroe would appreciate. Marshall steps outside the Regency "ballroom" box with her offbeat characters, adventurous setting, and witty dialogue that will delight historical fans. Just be prepared to laugh out loud!

I applaud Marshall for casting Alexander as a grumpy hero and Daphne as a dizzy heroine ... they appealed to me more than the garden variety Naval officer and society lady. Their personalities gave them the opportunity to grow when push came to shove during their close confinement as castaways. The book's setting is a natural choice for a beach read but it is the comic relief that makes it a must read for summer vacation.

I received an ARC from the author.
