Detective Tracy Crosswhite is fantastic, and so is Robert Dugoni's writing!

What a wonderful change of pace! I had almost forgotten that I was a fan of crime novels.
I am a huge fan of Patricia Cornwell and her Kay Scarpetta Detective series. Now, I can add Robert Dugoni’s Tracy Crosswhite to the list!
In “Her Final Breath”, we are introduced to Detective Tracy Crosswhite and a battery of characters that make up the Seattle Police Department, and its entire forensic and legal team. I have not had the pleasure of reading the first Tracy Crosswhite book, “My Sister’s Grave”, YET! But, it is now on my to-read list.
I am hoping that Robert Dugoni has more to tell about Tracy...I really want to learn what happens with her and Dan. And, of course, have her solving other crimes.
While reading this book, it was playing in my head like a movie (or, CSI-Miami and Law & Order – SVU). It was THAT good!!!
The story begins with Detective Tracy Crosswhite going to the shooting range with Officer Katie Pryor, who is preparing for her Shooting Qualification Test. Tracy holds the best qualifying target in the department, so people want to train with her. When the practice was over, Tracy stayed behind to pick up all of the loose slugs on the ground, so Katie could get back to her family. I had already decided that I liked Tracy Crosswhite at this point. She was a caring person. I felt a connection to her right away.
That day at the range, Tracy is being followed or watched, because she heard noises and upon exiting the Shooting Range she discovers a noose hanging at the front gate.
That same noose was what was being used to kill women in the Seattle area. Or, was it someone else all-together? Was her Stalker and the Murderer the same person? Or, someone mad that an old case was not worked properly?
There was someone murdering female exotic dancers. He was hog-tying his victims like cattle. This was a way of dying that was just awful. The way Robert Dugoni writes about it, you can really imagine the agonizing deaths.
Once they had a third murder victim, the Seattle Police Department knew they had a Serial Killer on their hands.
They dubbed the Serial Killer, “The Cowboy”, because of the hog-tying. Tracy was the given the position of lead detective once they put together a Task Force to solve these crimes. Then, there was no rest until they could find the killer, and stop them. The “Cowboy” would not be so easily caught!
I thought I had the whole story figured out, only to learn that I was completely wrong.
And, sometimes it is great to be wrong!

The next Tracy Crosswhite story keeps you on your toes and aching for more.

Detective Tracy Crosswhite has returned to her post as homicide detective in Seattle after finding her sister’s remains and getting a retrial for her killer. Still reeling from the ordeal she is pulled into an investigation that almost ends her career and her life, a new serial killer now as the Cowboy is killing women in cheap motels in Seattle. Tracy finds herself in the middle of the investigation as the killer leaves menacing messages for her. A task force is formed with Tracy taking point to try and solve the murders. Clues lead them to a decade-old homicide investigation that includes her captain Johnny Nolasco, who has never been on her side. The Cowboy is still on the hunt and Tracy wants to find the evidence to stop him before she becomes his next victim.
Robert Dugoni is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Last year’s My Sister’s Grave was by far my favorite book of the year. As soon as I knew there was going to be another Tracy Crosswhite story, I was anxious to get my hands on it. Dugoni has found a winning combination with Detective Crosswhite and her ability to solve horrific crimes. I have to say Her Final Breath was not as good as My Sister’s Grave but is still by favorite of the year so far. I think the thing that made this one not quite as good was it lacked the emotional aspect that made such an impact with the first. When Tracy was so consumed with finding her sister’s killer and getting justice, the story flew by without a second thought. At times this one brought a little of the emotional aspect when Tracy was being targeted but it didn’t hit as hard as looking for her sister’s killer.
Without a doubt, it is an excellent read and one that anyone who enjoys a good suspense thriller needs to add to their collection. The story flows smoothly without anything to take you away from the characters. Several are easily liked while others are easy to despise. I’m not sure if there will be another in the series, but I feel Tracy Crosswhite has more to say and more cases to solve and I for one would like to see her in action.

A great addition to the Tracy Crosswhite series. Great red herrings & twists.

My Review: After the whirlwind of reading Dugoni's first book in his Tracy Crosswhite series, My Sister's Grave a few weeks ago you can bet that I was more than eager to read Her Final Breath, the second book in the series which picks up where My Sister's Grave left off.
I enjoyed how Dugoni brought one of Tracy's previous cases that was mentioned in the first book to the forefront here. As a reader it's great when books in a series are intertwined with story arcs and characters. Once again Dugoni's attention to detail is evident as he weaves his stories which are a perfect mix of police procedural, suspense and mystery. He gives his readers twists that kept me guessing and second guessing who I thought had 'dunnit'. There were many suspects which makes for good red herrings but, I will admit, sometimes made it harder to figure out who was who among the characters.
While this was another great read by Dugoni but I didn't love it quite as much. Dugoni had some mighty big literary shoes to fill since I adored My Sister's Grave (and gave it a very rare 5 stars). Unfortunately I didn't find myself as emotionally invested in Her Final Breath and it wasn't quite as riveting as My Sister's Grave which was non-stop suspense. This time around there's still a lot of tension and twists abound but Dugoni lets the reader come up for air in between periods of suspense.
The reader gets to see another side of Tracy - as part of the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crime Squad. Some characters from the first book make appearances and there are some new characters introduced as the reader is made privy to Tracy's professional life. These include her partner, Kinsington Rowe (whom I hope makes more appearances in future books) and Tracy's notoriously nasty, ornery and back stabbing Captain Nolasco. Man, I love to hate that guy!
Tracy is once again a tenacious and strong main character who has her sights set on finding this killer and a stalker. She's easy to root for and has enough turmoil in her life to be believable but not overdone.
Dan, Tracy's romantic interest, whom we met in the first book continues to be by Tracy's side. While their relationship is sweet it sometimes feels like he's a little too good to be true and this time around he felt more superfluous because he didn't really add much to the suspense or plot. I'd like to see more issues between them or something dark from Dan's past brought to the surface to spice things up. These two have been through so much but it doesn't seem to have affected their relationship very much.
Note: While it's not necessary to read My Sister's Grave before taking on this book I highly recommend reading this series in order. Dugoni does a good job filling in some of the blanks if the reader hasn't read the first book but reading the books in order will give the reader a much more well-rounded look at relationships and larger story arcs that spread between the books.
Once again Dugoni proves he has a knack for setting up his plot and slowly building suspense so that all of a sudden the reader finds that they cannot put the book down for any length of time. This was an enjoyable read and a great addition to what is becoming a favourite suspense series of mine.
