I highly recommend this book for people who don't quiet understand a computer or how to function a computer. I am currently using this book for one of my classes and all the information from the class is in the book. The example pictures are mostly current to an actual computer.

Book never came...but I got my money back

Really, I never got the book. I don't know if they sent the darn thing from Owl Books by owl or by something extremely slow, but it never got to me and the baby is already two months old for whom this was a gift!

No way amd I going to buy a book from Owl Books again. I am sure that I can find the book somewhere else and not have to be disappointed. This was one of my son's favorite books when he was a toddler.

This was one of my favorite books growing up -- although back then it was published as a BIG Golden Book, not a "Little" one... I've ordered one for my son to enjoy, because all these many years later, my mother still won't let me have possession of the copy I grew up with. The illustrations on the original were by Leonard Weisgard, and were stunning -- I only hope that the new version does the original justice

Best single book in the Agile canon

Alistair has always been an interesting thinker, one worth reading for the clarity of his thought and the insights he brings from his very open minded observation and talking with development teams. With his new book, Crystal Clear, however, Alistair has become a really good writer. In fact, I would say he has written the single best book in the collection of writings on Agile methodologies.

If you want the most comprehensive overview of Agile, you still must read Highsmith's Agile Software Development Ecosystems. If you want the most poetic, read Kent's White Book. For amazingly clear and simple writing and thinking, Poppendieck. But if you want a really really useful book on how to actually do agile, and you don't have that much time to invest, get Alistair's book.

One of the things I really like is the variety of different writing styles from chapter to chapter: from the email "love letters" written to Crystal (Alistair's methodology muse), to the simple exposition of seven properties underlying agile, to the clearly illustrated strategies and techniques, to work product samples, and to the final one page chapter giving an expert (level 3) view of the whole methodology. His writing is constantly engaging, inventive, conversational and even fun.

While Alistair writes about one methodology (and only one of his Crystal family of methodologies), the book is still universal. It covers the basic things that few agile teams would disagree with. Even if you work in a large, complex environment, this is the place to start.

Building Trust

This book is so important to the discussion of Agile/Adaptive development processes that I have included it in my syllabus for Adaptive Project Management (MBA in Technology Management, Westminster College, Salt Lake City, UT).

Alistair Cockburn has presented 7 prinicples that assure software development is a human-based enterprise instead of a mechanical process. He doesn't say this explicitly, which is either to his credit, or for his next book: these principles all relate to the process of building trust and groups depend on this elusive element to challenge each other's work and to continually look for the creative and productive solution. The reader would be well advised to read both this book and either Cockburn's Writing Use Cases and/or Ellen Gottesdiener's book on Collaborative Requirements Gathering so that you can practice these principles in other realms of the development process.

Some of the clearest thinking in the Agile space. This text communicates the concept and spirit of what Agile is and why we do it. Cockburn is, gratefully, opposed to dogma and for "thinking" on the part of software development teams - what a concept!

Proof of the sorry state of today's academic world

A collection of essays, infused with Marxist and post-modernist jargon, dedicated to the proposition that
global hip-hop (one of America's most pernicious exports to the world) represents resistance to the evil
hegemony of Western discourse. That most of the purveyors of this often subliterate pseudo-scholarship
have academic affiliations is a sad commentary on the intellectual degeneracy of the American university,
which is increasingly a factory for the production of ideology and social engineering.

An excellent text for exploring popular culture and hegemony

This text includes an excellent selection of semiotic and cultural studies analyses of Disney movies, including feminist analyses. I like the variety--some are oppositional readings, some negotiated readings to show that some progressive features can be found. One of my favorite essays included is the study of Pretty Woman through the black female gaze and how it develops the analysis of the subtext. I find the text very helpful for my Popular Culture and Gender Construction course (which explores the intersections of gender, race, class and other markers of identity in a variety of areas of popular culture). The introduction establishes key ideas about the value of the critical study of popular culture in depth and emphasizes the power Disney holds.

I had to order this book for my EWS class. Honestly, I thought this would be another one of those boring books I had to torture myself to read; that is, just by judging by the cover. As I was reading it, I found myself to be enjoying this book quite a lot. I agreed to a lot of the points made in the articles and I really do hope that EWS professors would choose this book for the class. Lesson learned? Don't judge a book by its cover.

Accessible Critiques

Perhaps the most important contribution to Disney Studies this book offers is an accessibility that, at the same time, offers a serious reconsideration of Disney films. Disney, for these scholars, is not above serious consideration and critique. In considering Disney worthy of study, the authors pay Disney a sincere (if backhanded and misunderstood) compliment. Rather than dismissing Disney as "just for children," they collectively question Disney's products and examine their influence.
In this collection of essays, the editors have managed to compile a broad range of materials that critique Disney in the spirit of critique, meaning a thoughtful and serious investigation. As the title suggests, much of the work here is interested in gender, but questions of race and ethnicity are also asked, as well as issues of power and identity. Although these are fairly heady topics, many of the essays are lively and engaging. For those just beginning to study Disney seriously, the works of Jack Zipes and Henry Giroux are recommended. For work on the animated films, the contributions of the editors (Bell, Haas, and Sells) are thought-provoking as well. All the essays, in fact, offer food for thought, whether one is in agreement with the authors or not.
People who think, "But it's just a cartoon," may not enjoy this challenge to reconsider Disney's films for their cultural impact. Then again, these very same people might be the most rewarded by such a collection. It is recommended for educators wishing to introduce critical thinking into a college classroom using Disney films, scholars working in Disney Studies, and Disney enthusiasts keeping abreast on writings on Disney.
