Wendi Wilson is mom to two rambunctious boys, two cats, a snake, a guinea pig, and a fish. She lives in Southern California with her husband and kids, writing in every spare moment she gets; those moments not already consumed by volunteering for PTA, team parenting various sports teams in baseball and football, and reading as many books as humanly possible.

A WONDERFUL START TO A SERIES. CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE.

I ran across this book in a reading group. The cover and blurb drew me in and I’m so glad I decided to read it. There are tons of books about teenagers who suddenly discover they’re special. Unfortunately, the books themselves aren’t. It’s all on how the characters are portrayed, and this one fits the bill.

The main protagonists is sixteen year-old Melanie. She’s overweight, has a huge inferiority complex, and has been bullied most of her life by Sissy. Even though Sissy is nothing but a mean, spiteful person, she is the epitome of what Melanie wants to look like. It doesn’t help that Melanie also has the hots for Jeremy, someone she’s known must of her life, but he only sees her as a friend. Unfortunately, Sissy has her eye on him too.

One fateful day, at a party, Jeremy strolls in with Sissy on his arm, who proceeds to belittle and bully Melanie. Upset, Mel takes off on foot to go home, in the dark, alone, and along the way, she’s attacked. Someone has had his eye on her for awhile,and now it’s his time to make her his. Her savior is a huge dog Melanie has never seen before. Who is the dark man that assaulted Mel? And why is he still stalking her?

I have to admit, I figured most of the plot out pretty fast, though I was sidetracked at one point. But I didn’t care, as I really fell in love with the characters. I enjoyed the banter between Mel and her best friend, Tara, and caught myself chuckling a few times over their antics. Wendi Wilson did an awesome job portraying the insecurities of a teenager in high school. Even though it’s been 40 years since I graduated high school, she took me right back to all the teenage drama.

Most of the story is about Melanie and coming to terms with her body, finding the guy that’s stalking her, and the developing relationship between her and Jeremy. The paranormal elements were slowly blended in and I anxiously waited to see who Melanie really was. I was mildly surprised to find out the real answer. This book does leave you on a cliffhanger, and I definitely want to read the next book in the series.

I didn’t find anything really wrong with the tale, other than some very minor proofreading issues. The plot was fast, the characters relatable and likeable, and it was well-written. I highly recommend it for YA lovers of the paranormal and I give it 5 feathers. Well done.

Why I loved Shadowed Strength

Prologue
This was one fantastic prologue, I normally never mention these. Fear trickled over my spine and I could sense the danger Mealnie was in.

The book is sooo easy to read - I don't mean that the language is simple but the writing style is perfect and the story flies swiftly.

Melanie
Every girl will be reminded of their teenage years after reading about Melanie.
Melanie was slightly overweight, was trying to find herelf and had a bitchy nemesis.
Her character development was depicted well. She went from shy, insecure, non confrontational to confident & someone who can take a stand for herself.

Creepy Mystery Attacker
Melanie was dealing with a serious problem here and her reactions were believable. The mystery was written well and it had a red herring too. I think it set a good example when Melanie planned to overcome the situation instead of tolerating torment.

Tara She was EVERYTHING a best friend should be and that's the highest compliment I can think of right now.

Jeremy
Usually boys in high school are portrayed as nerds, jocks, jerks or some combination of these traits.
Jeremy was swoonworthy, a knight in shining armour, how most of us fantasized our First Love should be. He was kind, patient, funny, protective, considerate, I have a never ending list of praise...

Complete Package
This book had a lot of elements like mystery, paranormal, young romance, friendship, family, the search for your identity and they come together perfectly.

Cliffhanger
The story has a massive cliffhanger but fortunately, I have the sequel and can get started soon.

This was a perfect blend of YA romance & paranormal and is highly recommended to readers of both genres.

Melanie - from inadequate to extraordinary

Melanie is a normal sixteen-year-old girl, living a normal life and going to a normal high-school - as far as she knows. She has a crush on a normal, howbeit very attractive boy, who regards her only as a friend - as far as she knows. Her biggest problem – up to this point - is a poor body-image, due in large part to a malicious classmate who has belittled and persecuted her from early childhood. Melanie’s greatest assets, when the story opens, are her loyal best girlfriend and her loving mother. With their help, she is overcoming her shyness and groping her way to a normal social life. All of these factors, and several new ones she does not yet know, come together at a party that changes everything.
The narrative is confident and steady. The language and style are appropriate to an adolescent readership – as far as I know: the running conversation between the girls seems natural. There are a few strong words, but no profanity. There is some violence, but it’s brief and not too graphic. The moral tone is consistently high, both in dealing with teenage sexuality and in regard to respect, concern and consideration between friends. It won’t teach young readers anything untoward – unless perhaps reliance on the supernatural.
For me, the plot is a bit slow; while the suspense builds, actual events are few and far apart: by the time they arrive, the surprise is quite gone. The dialogue and action tend to be repetitious. I admit I don’t know what teenaged girls like to read, or whether they obsess over anything besides boys. For my own part, I’d like them to have a little more intellectual stimulation.

Don't miss out on this gem! This book is an experience.

After following Jeff and Shaleia's work online for some time, I was really excited to read their book. And it did not disappoint. It is an accurate reflection of their unified energy - it is concise, intimate, clear, encouraging, full of love and rich with information.

This is a book to be experienced. Coming into contact with its material is being immediately uplifted into the frequency of true love and divine truth, into the vibration of twin flame union! It's a very exciting book for that reason. I also love that Jeff and Shaleia get personal and generous with their own inspirational story.

The mirror exercise included in the book is ultra powerful. Upon using it for the first time, it sent me into a really deep journey. I was led into a breakthrough that changed everything for me and I've been enjoying integrating all of the new energies and parts of myself it's brought forth into my life. I came on the other side of an issue I'd been actively dealing with for about 9 months (without counting the endless years of repetitive patterns prior!).

This book will bring you to smile, relax, feel your heart open, your mind clear, and your spirit motivated! A beautiful work of love and service. You two rock!

A Must Read!

Wonderfully written and difficult to put down. It is a refreshing look on the whole concept of Twin Flames and for a skeptic like me, it was easy to digest. I love the balance between the sharing of their own journey as Twin Flames and real practical guidance on how the rest of us can get to the point of reunion.

For their next book, I want to read tons and tons of stories of reunions because some of us need to keep the faith alive. I believe they are both truly gifted and here to serve as guides for the rest of us that are muddling through this strange, wondrous experience.

I have read everything and anything pertaining to the Twin Flame reunion BUT I have NEVER come across a book as valuable as this one! The authors obviously KNOW what they're writing about ( experience is the best source of genuine information and know-how )
This marvelous reunited Twin Flame couple have presented THEIR story in a refreshing, sweet and gentle manner propelling the reader into a world most haven't a clue exists! They have prepared the way..all we need to do is make use of the information and thus do our own thing..get into the act and attract the Beloved into physical form after the inner work has been accomplished...hmmmm..not easy? It is IF you follow the instructions in this gem of a book ...yaaaay!
Needless to say, there has been much mumbo-jumbo written about this subject and many books out there are better lost than found..lol!
However, as I have already mentioned, THIS book will open your heart, mind, soul and body to the wonders awaiting those blessed souls that open up to the magic and mystique of this glorious LOVE that is awaiting those who have the courage to embark on the journey of REUNION with the BELOVED.

quick fun read

The latest installment of the Space 1889 series is a fun quick read. I was a bit worried about the series after the third and forth books but this one gets things back on track. The new characters introduced are very well put together and add some flavor. I do hope that the series continues on Mars and lets a few of the side characters become mainstays. I enjoy both protagonists but they could use a little help. The setting of this book is by far the best of all the Space 1889 settings and it really adds to the enjoyment of this book.

Great intro into Victorian-era sci-fi

If you are looking for an exciting, well-written intro into the world of Steampunk sci-fi, you need look no further. A good story, tautly paced, that leaves the reader wanting to explore more of the universe created in this series. This book should appeal to fans of both the Steampunk genre and the books of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. I look forward to reading more works by the author, Frank Chadwick.

It is a solid adventure plot where story development seems logical and yet manages to surprise you sometimes (that's a hard balance to pull off). The world is interesting and well-thought-out with no obvious contradictions. The story is fairly similar to HG Wells' or Jules Vernes' science fiction.

There is a description of the psychology of getting used to being an amputee, that seems apt and insightful to me.

Apart from that the story is somewhat lacking in character development for the main characters (but you could say that about Jules Vernes' and HG Wells' stories too). However, that might be because I have only read one part in a series.

If you are interested in the Space 1889 world or Steampunk science fiction or just like a good adventure story you should definitely read this.

Optionable and Actionable

This edition of "Trading Options for Dummies" builds on the success of the initial work. Duarte revised and updated the work ably adding his own tone and experience to the title while preserving the key concepts and essence of the original. It's clear that the editing team spent a fair amount of time and effort to address the areas of the first book that may have been seen as quirky by the casual reader. Key elements of the book include the emphasis on risk management and paying attention to detail before trying to go for profits. Duarte provides detailed descriptions of workable and reliable strategies while updating the book to fit the current markets in the post 2008 era of the Great Recession. Like many of the Dummies books, this one is modular, so the reader can start just about anywhere and work through the chapter, although reading it from start to finish is always the best way. I've read all of Dr. Duarte's books and look forward to the next one.

Very disappointed in this book

This is a good book about options but I don't believe it's for beginners. I really wanted to like it but the chapters on overall market direction are just worthless to me. If you don't know how to judge the marketplace when what are you doing with options.
This book is supposed to be about options not technical analysis, that's another whole book as is trading stocks.
Also I found the way the book jumps around was hard to follow and would loose me at times.
I'm really surprised about all this.
I found the book Understanding Options by Michael Sincere way better.
I suggest reading that one first and omit this failed dummies book unless you find a used copy.
This book needs a complete overall.

Great book on a new software topic

If you write code for fun or for a livelihood, I recommend you check this book out.

According to the book, Feedback Control is a topic well known to mechanical engineers, but not so much in the software industry. Feedback Control is about making smarter systems that can cope with dynamic environments. Many knobs that developers build into configuration can actually be automated with feedback loops.

Examples given early in the book:
* A Cache by tracking hit rate and changing the cache size
* A Server Farm by tracking request latency and changing number of deployed server nodes
* A Queueing System by tracking wait time and changing the number of workers
* A Graphics Library by tracking memory consumption and changing the output resolution

The book is well written. It starts out with practical examples and working code. It later introduces the deep theory and drops some math bombs. Don't worry, there is Python code for everything and you don't have to understand the math.

It gives solid advice, like don't blindly use Feedback Control for optimization; optimization needs a higher level strategy guiding the process.

Lastly, there are references for further reading, if you do want to work through more of the theory.

The term Enterprise is thrown about, don't let this scare you away :) This is a valuable book for many types of software problems. A couple I've brainstormed while reading:
* Controlling difficulty of a video game, to react to how skilled a player is
* Controlling aspects of an animation
* Controlling polling of APIs for fresh data
* Driving load testing to find different scaling points (errors, high latency, etc)

I was doing PID for dynamic network flow control via software... This book explained the topic clearly

If you have a coding situation that smells even a little bit like a PID controller would help then you should get this book to provide good explanation of how dynamic control behaves in software. Good solid actionable info and clear presentation.

Well done and thanks for filling a much needed segment of software fundamentals.

Feedback is the Organizing Principle for the Real-Time Economy

I want to say one word... Just one word.,, Are you listening? * Feedback.*

I couldn't resist using that line from the movie "The Graduate". Just as plastics became central to the industrial economy of the last century; feedback is becoming central to the real-time economy of this century. Effective use of information technology to enable companies to harness the power of feedback is the highest calling of the IT professional in this century and this economy. Companies that learn to harness feedback to guide their operations will be big winners in our real-time economy.

Success in the real-time economy is about continuous response to change even more so than it is about being efficient. Efficiency is an Industrial age concept. Continuous response to change (while remaining efficient enough) is what we need to succeed in this age. That means feedback and understanding how to use feedback to guide and manage IT operations moment to moment.

Mr. Janert presents the concepts of feedback in a clear and detailed manner. The IT professional who wants to specialize in the fine art and discipline of operating data centers in the real-time economy needs to understand feedback and how to apply it to run IT operations moment to moment as the real-time world unfolds. Janert presents specific examples of applying the principles of feedback to the tasks involved in running data centers. He illustrates his examples with samples of code and as you work through the code exercises, you get a clear understanding of how to apply these principles.

The only reason I don't give this book a five star rating is that I wanted it to go beyond IT operations and show how feedback can also be applied to business operations. The same principles of feedback that govern the spin up of more virtual server instances in a cloud data center also apply to the order picking activity in a warehouse. The same principles of feedback that apply to the allocation of DRAM and storage space in a dynamic and unpredictable operations environment also apply to the allocation of money in a financial portfolio or the scheduling of delivery vehicles on a road network. IT pros need to appreciate this larger picture because it provides context to understand how IT and business operations can use feedback to work together in the real-time world.

This book is for the devoted and highly skilled IT ops professional and for those who aspire to be highly skilled IT ops professionals. If I was a CIO or IT Ops Director running a data center of any size, I would strongly encourage all of my staff to read this book.

Informative and doable tips!

I have been using youtube for half of my life but never once thought about making money out of it. It has been solely for research and entertainment. This book changed my mind. It is no short book for me, I have to admit. However, to fully deliver such great amount of complete detailed instructions one might need, this is definitely worth your time and consideration. I highly appreciate all the specific information on how people make money with this amazing site. Advertising and marketing, either your own products or others', this is the summary on where the money comes from. This book provides all one needs to know on HOW to do so. Everything about copyrights, rules, competitions is included. I had never heard about Adsense and Adwords before reading this book. You can also find tons of useful advices in Q&A chapter or the one about things to avoid. The knowledge this book offers itself is amazing, to be honest.

ALMOST a five star read

I have never really looked at YouTube as a platform for generating revenue. It was for entertainment and social media buzz; this book changed all that! I did not know it was owned by Google, nor that longer length videos are an earned privilege. Ok… so the history of the company was impressive enough for me to continue reading about just how I might be able to generate revenue there…

The writer offered the benefits, how to strategically research competitive data, was precise in the topic of copyrights, wise in the types of content to use and how to match that to an appropriate niche. Some of the basic marketing information was not new to me, but other readers might find it new and essential; I was not previously aware of the ability to add meta tags to the work posted there!

My barometer on reading books like this is whether I come away with at least one gem; that I did! There were a few minor formatting issues in the book, the grammar was good, and the tone of writing - inviting and engaging. Putting the preview of the next book, “Hacking” was genius - I know there is a next read, and it has nothing to do with sliding over to the criminal side of life!

I don't often give 5 stars - Name is misleading

First of all, I rarely see a book to which I'd give five stars, but this certainly deserves them! Besides that, the greatest praise I can give to a book it to make it as stained and tattered as my copy is! This means I've carried it with me everywhere so I would have it to read every spare second I had.
I think the name of the book is misleading. Had I known what this book was really about, I would have gotten it a long time ago. The Zone System (the seminal reference is probably THE NEGATIVE by Ansel Adams) is fairly straightforward, and some authors hash is to death and try to make it more complicated than it is. I thought this book was another "make something simple more complicated" books like that, but it's not. It might better be called "Sensitometry for Photographers."
It is a technical book on sensitometry - characterizing how photographic film and paper respond to exposure and development - and how to use that information to your benefit. It answers questions I've been asking for a long time, such as, "How is the ISO speed determined for film," and, "Why do B&W photographers rate their film at a speed lower than ISO?"
The book eventually does describe the Zone System and explains technically what it is doing, but doesn't try to complicate the system. The book discusses how the light meter determines exposure, and how to make a densitometer from a spot meter. It also introduces a simple and handy "incident zone system" using an incident meter that provides good exposure without a well-developed sense of visualization on the part of the photographer.
Be warned: This book IS technical in nature and involves a lot of graphs. Even though the author attempts to allay your math fears, reviews math principles and even goes in gross detail on technical drawing and graphing techniques, if reconciling your checkbook sends shivers down your spine, you're probably not going to make it very far through this book. (However, it's a joy to engineer-photographers such as myself tired of physical principles being oversimplified in other sources.)
Although the book is directed mainly toward large-format sheet-film photographers who can develop individual exposures independently, I think that any serious amateur or professional photographer would benefit from reading this book to understand the interaction of light, film and paper, and how to get the best from your materials. Many of the principles and procedures can be applied, at least in part, to roll films to ensure good exposure.

I wish I'd read this years ago!

Phil Davis has written a truly educational book that all photographers should read. Not only does he cover the zone system, which most of us have been exposed to, but he tackles the more difficult subject of sensitometery in an understandable way. Having read this book, I absolutely understand the results of my photographic efforts far better and am learing to apply the knowledge in advance to ensure better results.
If you're a casual picture taker this book will be too much for you, but if you are serious about taking full advantage of your equipment to create the best possible work you'll find reading this book to be time well spent.

A must-read for advanced photographers

This is a book all master photographers who shoot and print their own work should understand and use. It is a definitive work on the science and engineering of photo sensitive emulsions that applies not only to standard silver-halide photography but alternative methods as well like Platinum/Palladium, gum bichromate, cyanotypes, etc. although the other methods are not directly covered by the text.
This book was written for the "left brain" with all its formulas, methods and explanations. But, it is detailed enough that the brain does not have to fill in the blanks of information not included as is the case with many such books. There is a section that addresses a method of exposure form a more "right brain" view and draws on the experience of using a light meter for photographers who are at that level.
I do not believe how well written this book is compared to others dealing with the same subject. I wish I had found this book years ago.
