The Holy Grail for how the early manned space program happened.

If you want to know how the first person to set foot on the moon was chosen, or any of the other why's that were previously unknown and hidden to outside knowledge, then this is the book that you'll want to read.

Deke Slayton was an astronaut himself with one of the most fascinating personal stories (which we learn in this book). But he was also deeply involved, perhaps more than anyone, in choosing who flew and on which flights.

Before Slayton died at a relatively young age, his name was added to a book called "Moon Shot," which was shallow and disappointing. The stories I knew he must have were not in there. With his death, I assumed that we'd lost any opportunity to know how the astronaut selection process had worked, something which had decided which spacefarer would be a name to be remembered for all time in the history books, and who would be obscure, even forgotten.

But then I found that he hadn't written "Moonshot" - he'd actually been working on this second, much better, much deeper book. And here are all the stories. For the first time, we learned how some of the most historic and momentous decisions were made. It makes for fascinating reading, and I am thankful that Slayton took the time to get it all down on paper before he passed away.

Possibly the best recommendation for this book is that many astronauts have commented that they did not know why they had been picked for certain flights (or passed over) until, decades after retirement, they read this book.

An essential read for anyone with the slightest interest in some of the most important historical events of our age.

Breathing Space for the Bible

The articles included in this book open space around Bible passages that for me were packed tight, even smothered, by the preaching and teaching of my childhood. Opening space for alternative readings allows the scriptures to breath and live again. The book does not hold forth a new dogma--a new absolute way to read the scripture. It does not replace one fundamentalism with another. The book is based on the premise that to read is always to interpret. Our reading is always influenced by who we are, when and where we live, and many other factors that affect our perspective. The authors acknowledge that they are reading the Bible passages as queers--as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. In essense, the book asks again and again, what if we look at it this way? It opens possibilities. The book addresses the Garden of Eden, Exodus, Ruth, Jexable, Nehemiah, Jonah, Mary of Magdela, Lazurus, and many other people, stories, and passages. Some of the chapters are down to earth, others more scholarly. If a more open reading of the Bible is of interest to you, this book is for you.

An interesting collection

This book is an interesting collection of essays by authors who choose particular aspects of the Bible or of historical attitudes toward sexuality in the Bible. Some of the writers are quite well known and respected. The articles, as in all edited books, are mixed in the quality of their writing, but all offer interesting takes on the place of LGBTQ people within the spiritual makeup of humanity.

Really cool book

This is a cool book but I was confused as to why they chose to include the backs of some pages to show the marker bleeds for some of the art but not all of it and why there were some totally blank pages. This book has a really nice to feel to it. While I'm not a graffiti artist, I have held and looked through a bunch of graffiti artist's black books and they all felt just like World Piecebook. What I would love to see for a future book in this series is a book filled with non-elaborate art - just pencil and pen sketches, works in progress, etc.

A book worthy of a place on your coffee table.

As a 'writer' from back in the '80's I loved this book. This is one of the best books showcasing and paying homage to the graffiti movement. Now I am a corporate 'type', I am proudly displaying this on my coffee table. It is interesting to watch people's reactions to it knowing this was once a big 'piece' of who I was and who I became.

For someone born in the early 70's and growing up in New York City in the 80's and 90's, graffiti and it's artists continue to be icons. Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente's third installation of their Piecebook phenomenon, World Piecebook: Global Graffiti Drawings, focuses on the exploration into graffiti across the globe and shows just how influential and important this art medium is. As graffiti continues to gain the respect and recognition it deserves in mainstream art circles, the artists included in this installation have been properly represented by two gentlemen who have themselves participated in the graffiti movement. As an authentic rendition of an artists "piecebook" or sketchbook, with the marker bleeding through the page, the art showcased on these pages depict stories and sometimes statements about love, hope, a struggle or protest and in other cases, just plain bravado.

I highly recommend anyone who is interested in graffiti, or grew up with it as a part of your life, and who wants a true artists' book; one without all the explanations about style and form, to purchase this book.

About the Author
A native of Scotland(born as Graeme Stephen), Bodhipaksa graduated from Glasgow University in 1984, having studied at the Glasgow Veterinary School since 1979. This is clearly the most helpful guide to meditation that I have ever read. Bodhipaksa's careful explanation of the meditative process eliminates much of the wonder and mystery we have about it.

Use of this book can help to make meditation a valuable tool for taking charge of our lives.

A highly recommended book on meditation.

I have read many books on meditation and this was by far the most clear and concise book of them all. I especially enjoyed the mindfulness of breathing chapter. The author gives a step by step process on how to get to one pointed concentration, whereas most other authors begin there. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about starting or enhancing their meditation practice.

Wonderful book but not for beginner.

This book goes into wonderful details about DNA and coupling to that are experiments to talk about how those discoveries were made. There are a lot of informations to which the reader must memorize to be a dedicated scientist. If the reader does not have a mature and analytical/reasoning skills, then all the informations will be gibberish. The reader also much have a basic understanding of chemistry and biology to understand the informations. If the reader is in high school and is taking Honor/AP biology then the informations will be clear cut. Some abbreviation are used and will not be told to what it stand for. Ex: the book used "bp" (it does not mean blood pressure), this refers to as "Base Pairs". The book did not provide "Base Pairs" so the reader must be able to reason it out base on the context and how bp was used. Over all comment on this book is IT'S AWESOME!!!!

Perfect for high-schools and junior-colleges

This is the perfect textbook for a first course in recombinant DNA technology. It covers both theories and laboratory procedures very well.

Students must have finshed high-school biology and chemistry before studying DNA Science. Students can also take DNA Science along with AP/IB biology.

After completing this textbook, university students will find textbooks such as "Molecular Biology of the Gene" and "Molecular Cloning-A Laboratory Manual" very easy.
