Thin But Not Quite Forgettable 62/100

The concept of changing or removing memories is a popular one in science fiction. But while the most successful attempts at that idea often take on dream-like and puzzle box qualities, "Forget Me Not" is more direct and concrete (whichever method you prefer will probably influence how you react to this story). Very short, even by short story standards, the characters are given only the simplest of details, and its semi-ironic conclusion is more pat than sublime. As a hasty sketch of an idea given shape, it works just enough for a mild recommendation, but it will likely leave the reader wanting more.

This short story had a good premise going, but it didn't really explain things very well. It was a bit hard to follow and wound up kind of disappointing.

A great short story that left me wanting more

Ever wonder if you could just hit the delete key on certain bad experiences in your life and just forget about them as if they never happened? That's the overall concept of this very interesting and well-written short story. It is a very quick read, but it kept my attention from the first page all the way to the end, so much that I kept tapping on the side of my Kindle Fire screen to continue reading the story, but alas, it was over! I wish it was a bit longer, but overall, I really enjoyed the story and hope Mr. Bentley-Mix is considering putting together an anthology in the near future. This one should definitely be included! While very short, I believe "Forget Me Not" is worth a buck for a good quick read. I look forward to reading more short stories from this author.

Can I Keep My Winnings?

Diane is a lawyer who has opened her own business and she isn't doing so well. She's lost her car, her apartment, and is living in her office. When Emma rings her doorbell on a Sunday, she's convinced it's probably a bill collector, yet she answers the door to find Emma asking for help. She is the winner of a $73
million dollar lotto ticket and her time is running out. She has 24 hours to claim it or it's gone. She hasn't turned it in because of some issues and secrets that she doesn't want aired again in the newspaper. What Emma wants is for Diane to keep the judge from letting her name be attached to the winnings. Since California and most states use the money to supplement their schools, it's going to be a hard job. Diane has to find a good reason for keeping her name from the media. She immediately begins searching for ways to keep it quiet.

24 HOUR LOTTERY an interesting story and brought up a lot of information that most citizens don't have when it comes to winning the lottery. It was informative and slightly mysterious as the reader waits for the final outcome. Emma, Diane, and the judge's characteristics were well developed. The book kept you on the edge of your chair while you waited for the outcome. It was definitely worth reading.

Would make a good movie

You might initially think that 24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a bit of a paradox. Afterall, who in their right mind would hesitate to turn in a $73 million lottery ticket? As it turns out, Emma Watkins seems to have a valid reason. She just needs Dianne Canton's help to persuade an unsympathetic judge that her fear is bona fide. Dianne is skeptical, but is so down on her luck that she is willing to make the effort.

With economic times being what they are, the dire circumstances that Dianne finds herself in is very believable. The other characters in this book are also convincing and well fleshed out. I could especially envision Emma, with her critical attitude and unedited emissions.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket is a fast paced novel that you won't want to put down. The ending has a good twist, but also left me wanting more answers. Perhaps there will be a follow up novel? In the meantime, I wouldn't mind seeing this on the big screen.

Great New Addition to The 'Law and Order' Genre

Who could refuse $73 million dollars?

Emma Watkins, a sixty-something disbarred judge with a heart of flint won't cash in her winning lottery ticket unless she can have the prize and remain anonymous. Emma needs a lawyer.

Dianne Canton, who skidded by to pass the California bar exam on the fifth try, is Emma's choice for her champion.

Readers will be intrigued to learn that even a well-funded effort to recall a judge can give some bad guys a chance to coverup their crimes, launder batches of money, kill a few people, and destroy anyone who gets in the way of their greed.

Gayle Tiller's courtroom ace, Dianne, juggles her personal, financial and romantic problems with the support of too much rocky road ice cream and Emma's hilarious and frequent swift verbal kicks to the backside of Dianne's legal briefs.

24 Hour Lottery Ticket entertains, puzzles and surprises every step of the way, down to the final minutes when the prize money hangs in the balance. Emma has secrets, as does the star witness for Dianne's case, the cranky judge hearing the arguments, and a succession of infuriating bureaucrats who stand in the way of justice. And, yes, Dianne has her own trunk full of relevant secrets as well.

I was intrigued and happily annoyed by the gruff Emma and mystified as to her motives. Dianne's rundown office, expanding waist line, and disarrayed life amuses because they promise to be fixable issues, once the poor lawyer catches a break. Tiller makes both lawyer and client come alive through their human failings, all-too-human hopes, and funny, witty jibes.

The plot line is wonderfully convoluted, just enough to keep us asking "what happens next?" without crossing the line into "that doesn't seem realistic."

Readers who like John Grisham's and Lisa Scottolini's fictional lawyers and their plights will be glad to offer partnerships in the legal genre firm to Dianne Canton and Gayle Tiller. Here's hoping both return again and again.

Academics have been particularly fascinated by the church in part because of its intentional fostering of Zulu tradition within the framework of evangelical Christianity. As a result it has come to be seen as a deeply conservative institution, one that acted as a bulwark against the presumably corrosive nature of modernity. In this remarkable study, however, Joel Cabrita pushes back against this characterization, arguing that far from simply embracing tradition, the Nazaretha reworked almost every aspect of their lives by espousing a living Bible; one in which a wide variety of written and oral sources combined with charismatic authority to produce a popular if volatile community of faith."

a descent book by my professor who wanted to do this to save money. It will never rise above 25 because the publisher promised him that. Mostly text,not much else. Useful and cheap.

Phillips and Brubaker at their best.

The short pitch is "Donnie Brasco with superheroes," but this story quickly becomes much more than a high concept tag line. Set in the early 2000's Wildstorm universe, Holden Carver goes undercover in the criminal world. His handler is put in a coma, and Carver has no choice but to play the bad guy to finish the mission.

This hardcover collects POINT BLANK #1-5, SLEEPER V.1 #1-12, SLEEPER V.2 #1-12 (listed as SLEEPER #1-24) COUP D'ETAT: SLEEPER #1 and COUP D'ETAT: AFTERWARD #1, SLEEPER.

The hardcover matches the other Phillips and Brubaker collections of CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO from Icon on the bookshelf.

A Huge Gritty Spy Novel

When I started the Sleeper Omnibus I wondered what I was getting into. It is a huge volume with a very different tale to tell. Brubaker is a master storyteller, and his talents are not limited to superhero stories. This felt to me to be one long illustrated novel rather than a comic book, which is a great distinction from most of the products from DC and Marvel.

The Sleeper is from the Vertigo line of comics from DC. Usually adult material, and this is no exception. I gave it only 4 stars because there were times I felt lost in the storyline and the pace would slow up a bit more than I would have liked. Still, overall I thought it was a great book.

A well produced collection of story arcs that make one great book. Glad I waited for the collection as it made the continuity easier to follow rather than wait a month between story parts. The other thing I love about the Omibus collections is that there are no ads breaking up the story and artwork. Well worth the money!

Brubaker's writing is dark gritty and hard hitting. If you are looking for a superhero to save the universe from a supervillain, this is the wrong book for you. If you're looking for a great read, heavy and have a weekend to spend in Ed's mind, I recommend this book.

I am a huge Ed Brubaker fan. I have a majority of his books, and enjoy them all. Oddly enough, this was one of my last ones to read. I had already read his DC/Marvel titles and his indies. However, as I saw stories getting collected I waited off on this one. When this omnibus came out, I grabbed it up. It is a great story, with excellent artwork. Besides the two volumes of Sleeper, it also comes with the tpb Point Blank, which is somewhat of a prequel to the main story, and a follow up one-shot. The book itself has a great sewn binding, one of DC's best (for those that don't know, Vertigo is a DC company), excellent paper, which makes the art work look amazing, and has a few extras. The reason I gave it a four star review is simply, it is not his best work. Its a great story, however, when compared to his other work, especially if you read his other work first, you get the feeling that this is Brubaker's first step into these gritty worlds he is known for, and not a return visit like Criminal or Fatale, where his writing is near perfection. Nonetheless, I do recommend this story, especially to those who are just discovering Brubaker's work. He is an amazing writer, somewhat underrated as of late, and this is a great starting point into the gritty, noir style of writing he now masterfully creates.

a very good book I find this book goes very well with another book "jo: the Japanese short staff (unique literary books of the world)" this is a very interesting book I would recommend this book for anyone interested in aikido or stick fighting.

I wish the pictures were more descriptive

The book is fine for basic instruction, but taking it from a complete novice is frustrating because for me, the pictures just do not show what the author is trying to get across. I wind up going to computer videos for more explanation on what he is trying to get across. True, all martial arts should be learned through a teacher who can teach basics and safety, and make sure your techniques are done correctly and with control. No book can ever teach you the amount of force and control, but I guess this book might be good as a supplement.

This is a good manual, except . . .

This is a very well written manual of jo exercises. The descriptions are easy to understand; and in a couple of places the author also shows the wrong way to do the lesson, so that the reader doesn't do that. The quality of the photos is much better than some other manuals

This book focuses on the techniques, so all though the book tells a little bit of history, history is not the main issue. That might affect your decision to buy the book, either positively or negatively.

My only complaint is directed at this class of book, and not really this book alone. I would like to see some of these books published with a spiral binding, like a technical manual, so that it can lay flat on a table. If I could read the advice while I'm trying to practice the lesson (while I have a jo in my hands, and I'm standing in chudan kumae) I would be happier.
