Different Editions
By David B. Layton
As with many books of sheet music for popular music these days, there is more than one edition. If you need the piano/vocal book, look for ISBN #0739051067 (or 978-0739051061). If you are looking for the guitar tab edition, look for ISBN #0739051075 (or 978-0739051078). Even though Amazon groups the reviews together, the books are different. With a little research and effort, you're sure to find just what you're looking for. Mine is the piano/vocal edition, and so far it looks great.

Inaccurate Tabs
By J. Allen
Most of these tabs aren't even close to being accurate, which is disappointing since they have the radiohead seal of approval. The notes are correct, but are not even remotely close to how the band plays them. I have all of the other tab books and they are wonderful, this one however is a big disappointment. I don't recommend wasting the money, much more accurate tabs are freely available online.

Inaccurate Guitar Tabs; close but no cigar.
By Z. Butler
As a previous reviewer said, the tabs/guitar music in this book are not correct. Playing the songs as written in this book will get you a sound that is close, but it is not how the songs are played on the album. Anyone with a good ear who can hear how the songs are played will be disappointed for sure. Some of the songs have parts that are correct, but the majority seems to be 'dumbed down' or something.

This is unfortunate because this album is amazing.

When Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Aleppo, Syria, she has a diploma from Mount Holyoke, a crash course in nursing, and only the most basic grasp of the Armenian language. It’s 1915, and Elizabeth has volunteered to help deliver food and medical aid to refugees of the Armenian Genocide during the First World War. There she meets Armen, a young Armenian engineer who has already lost his wife and infant daughter. After leaving Aleppo and traveling into Egypt to join the British Army, he begins to write Elizabeth letters, realizing that he has fallen in love with the wealthy young American.

Years later, their American granddaughter, Laura, embarks on a journey back through her family’s history, uncovering a story of love, loss—and a wrenching secret that has been buried for generations.

Review
“A deeply moving story of survival and enduring love.” —USA Today

“Bohjalian deftly weaves the many threads of this story back and forth, from past to present, from abuse to humanity, from devastation to redemption. . . . Utterly riveting.” —The Washington Post

“Chris Bohjalian is at his very finest in this searing story of love and war. I was mesmerized from page one. Bravo!” —Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife

“Bohjalian—the grandson of Armenian survivors—pours passion, pride, and sadness into his tale of ethnic destruction and endurance.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Dead-solid perfect. Bohjalian is a literary novelist unafraid to reference Proust's madeleine and expect readers to get it. But his books are also filled with artfully drawn characters and great, passionate storytelling. The Sandcastle Girls is all that, but different, more powerful.” —The Seattle Times

“In his latest novel, master storyteller Chris Bohjalian explores the ways in which our ancestral past informs our contemporary lives—in ways we understand and ways that remain mysteriously out of reach. The Sandcastle Girls is deft, layered, eye-opening, and riveting. I was deeply moved.” —Wally Lamb, author of The Hour I First Believed

“A searing, tightly woven tale of war and the legacy it leaves behind. . . . A nuanced, sophisticated portrayal of what it means not only to endure, but to insist on hope.” —Oprah.com

“It takes a talented novelist to combine fully ripened characters, an engrossing storyline, exquisite prose and set it against a horrific historical backdrop—in this case, the Armenian Genocide—and completely enchant readers. The prolific and captivating Chris Bohjalian has done it all with The Sandcastle Girls.” —Associated Press

“The scope of The Sandcastle Girls is almost epic. . . . While there are the rich personal stories that his readers connect to, what he has achieved is much larger. Bohjalian has written a compelling and powerful novel that will bring the history of the genocide to a wide audience. The Sandcastle Girls will remain ingrained in your consciousness.” —The Armenian Weekly

“[A] great read. . . . Affecting.” —People

"This book is a masterfully written story of war and love and is especially meaningful as we approach the centennial observance of the 1915 Armenian genocide." —Louisville Courier-Journal

“A compelling new novel that is part love story, part history lesson. . . . An eye-opening tale of longing and discovery. . . . A bittersweet reflection on hope even in the darkest circumstances. . . . [The Sandcastle Girls] is about the ways the past informs the present, about the pain but also the richness of heritage.” —The Miami Herald

“Bohjalian succeeds in depicting the horror, without sentimentalizing it. . . . He has fulfilled the duty of anyone seeking to document a genocide—he ensures that we don’t look away.” —The Boston Globe

“An unforgettable exposition of the still too-little-known facts of the Armenian genocide and its multigenerational consequences.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Touching and believable, adding a softer dimension to what is at times a brutal story.” —The Vancouver Sun

“Bohjalian powerfully narrates an intricately nuanced romance with a complicated historical event at the forefront. With the centennial of the Armenian genocide fast approaching, this is not to be missed. Simply astounding.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“A beautiful, frightening, and unforgettable read.” —Publishers Weekly

“[Bohjalian’s] characters are as real as our own relatives. The well-researched history that forms the background informs, intrigues, and enchants—even as recollections of horror mount.” —The Florida Times-Union

"A tender love story." —The Plain Dealer

“Remarkably supple. . . . Bohjalian keeps his eyes on the personal, the little moments that illuminate broader social movements. . . . Moment by moment, and passage by passage, the novel lights up a disturbing period of history.” —The Columbus Dispatch

“So poignant. . . . Passion comes through clearly in The Sandcastle Girls, with Bohjalian’s carefully chosen words, his flesh and blood characters, and his vivid descriptions. . . . It is a story of death and the triumph of life and quite possibly the best thing Bohjalian has written.” —The Salisbury Post

"I was completely mesmerized by The Sandcastle Girls. Bohjalian pulls his readers into this fictional yet historical setting by educating, entertaining and enthralling them with beautifully written prose. . . . Truly enchanting.” —The Times Record News

“Sober, elegiac, and respectful. It’s not for the Lauras to capture the agony of those who perished, but they can, in small ways, show how human dignity reasserted itself in the face of unthinkable breaches of the social contract. At the opening of the novel, Laura reflects that Americans could benefit from a book called The Armenian Genocide for Dummies. Indeed, many of us could—but a fiction like Bohjalian’s, with its power to reach legions of readers, may be far more valuable.” —Seven Days

“So filled is it with the suspense of life and death that The Sandcastle Girls is difficult to categorize. The story is fiction, but it is true. It’s history, but it’s also art.” —The Weekly Standard

“[A] moving multi-generational saga. . . . A sober, elegiac, and touching novel.” —Bookreporter

"A romance so beautiful and believable it hurts.” —The Free Lance-Star (Fredericksburg, VA)

Chapter 1

The young woman, twenty-one, walks gingerly down the dusty street between her father and the American consul here in Aleppo, an energetic fellow almost her father’s age named Ryan Donald Martin, and draws the scarf over her hair and her cheeks. The men are detouring around the square near the base of the citadel because they don’t yet want her to see the deportees who arrived here last night--there will be time for that soon enough--but she fears she is going to be sick anyway. The smell of rotting flesh, excrement, and the July heat are conspiring to churn her stomach far worse than even the trip across the Atlantic had weeks earlier. She feels clammy and weak-kneed and reaches out for her father’s elbow to steady herself. Her father, in turn, gently taps her fingers with his hand, his vague and abstracted attempt at a comforting gesture.

“Miss Endicott, do you need to rest? You look a little peaked,” the consul says, and she glances at him. His brown eyes are wide and a little crazed, and already there are thin rivulets of sweat running down both sides of his face. He is wearing a beige linen jacket, which she imagines to be infinitely more comfortable than her father’s gray woolen suit. She brings her free hand to her own face and feels the moisture there. She nods in response to his question; she does need to sit, though it embarrasses her to admit this. Still, it may be a nonissue. She can’t see where she might on this squalid street. But Ryan quickly takes her arm and guides her from her father, leading her to a stoop on the shady side of the thin road. He wipes off the squat step with his bare hand. There is a ramshackle wooden door behind the stoop, shut tight against the midmorning heat, but she presumes that whoever lives there won’t mind if she sits. And so there she rests and breathes in deeply and slowly through her mouth, watching the women in their headscarves and long, loose robes--some hide all but their eyes behind burqas--and the men in their ornate blazers, their voluminous, shapeless trousers, and their flowerpot-like fez hats. Some of the men glance at her sympathetically as they pass, others with a brazen want in their eyes. She has been warned.

“There’s a nice breeze today,” Ryan says cheerfully, and while she appreciates the slightly cooler air, wafting along with it is the stench from the square. “Before you arrived, the heat was just unbearable.”

She can’t imagine it being hotter. At the moment, she can’t imagine anywhere being hotter. And yet she found their apartment last night unexpectedly comfortable after the endless weeks aboard a ship, then a horse-drawn carriage, and finally two train cars that boasted only wooden seats. It was warm, but she had stood at her window for nearly half an hour in the middle of the night, gazing out at the row of statuesque cypress on the hill beyond the American compound and the bower of trees just inside the walls. She saw more stars than she ever saw in Boston, and the half moon seemed to dangle eerily, beautifully close to the earth.

Her father is surveying the rows of sand-colored two-story buildings that curl toward an alley, his arms folded across his chest, his face stern, and then she notes him arch his back suddenly and stand up a little straighter. Ryan sees what he sees and murmurs just loud enough for her to hear, “Oh, Jesus, no. Not more.” Both Ryan and her father glance down at her, but they realize there is absolutely nothing they can do; there is not a way in the world to shield her from what is coming. Besides, this is why she is here, isn’t it? Didn’t she volunteer to be a part of this aid mission? To chronicle what she sees for their organization, the Friends of Armenia, and to volunteer at the hospital--to do, in essence, whatever she could to help? Still, discomfort leaches from both men like perspiration, and she finds it interesting that they are as embarrassed as they are disgusted. If they had been here alone--if she had remained back at the American compound--her father and the American consul now would be experiencing only rage. And so she presses the palm of her hand against the wall of the house, the stone unexpectedly cool, and rises.

Approaching from down the street is a staggering column of old women, and she is surprised to observe they are African. She stares, transfixed. She thinks of the paintings and drawings she has seen of American slave markets in the South from the 1840s and 1850s, though weren’t those women and men always clothed--if only in rags? These women are completely naked, bare from their feet to the long drapes of matted black hair. And it is the hair, long and straight though filthy and impossibly tangled, that causes her to understand that these women are white--at least they were once--and they are, in fact, not old at all. Many might be her age or even a little younger. All are beyond modesty, beyond caring. Their skin has been seared black by the sun or stained by the soil in which they have slept or, in some cases, by great yawning scabs and wounds that are open and festering and, even at this distance, malodorous. The women look like dying wild animals as they lurch forward, some holding on to the walls of the stone houses to remain erect. She has never in her life seen people so thin and wonders how in the name of God their bony legs can support them. Their breasts are lost to their ribs. The bones of their hips protrude like baskets.

“Elizabeth, you don’t need to watch,” her father is saying, but she does. She does.

Herding the women forward through the town are half a dozen young men, two on horseback who look nearly as weak as the women, and four walking beside the group. All of them have rifles slung over their shoulders. They, too, don’t look any older than Elizabeth, and it crosses her mind that the pair nearest her can’t be more than fifteen or sixteen; their moustaches are wisps, a boy’s attempt to look like a man.

Just before the group reaches them, the gendarmes guide the women down the narrow street that will lead eventually to the square beneath the citadel, where they will be deposited with the deportees who arrived here yesterday. The men are short-tempered and tired. They strike the women when they move slowly or clumsily. They yank them back to their feet by their hair when they collapse. Elizabeth tries to count the women as they turn to the right and disappear into the alley, but reflexively she looks away whenever one of the skeletons meets her eye. Still, she guesses there are at least 125 of them. She verbalizes the number aloud without thinking.

“I assure you, Miss Endicott,” says Ryan, “when that group left Zeitun or Adana or wherever, there were at least a thousand of them.”

“Why did the Turks take their clothes?” she asks him.

He shakes his head. “They don’t usually--unless they’re planning to kill them. Sometimes they take the men’s clothes immediately before executing them; they worry the clothes of the dead are defiled. But I have no idea why they did in this case. Degrade the survivors, maybe. Perhaps increase the chances they’ll die on their own in the sun. But don’t look for reason in any of this.”

“And where are the men?”

He dabs at his forehead with a handkerchief. “It’s safe to assume they’re dead. Either they were--” He doesn’t finish because her father glares at the consul to be silent. To be still. Her father is hoping to introduce her to this world gradually. In increments. They discussed it little on either the ship or the train. Generalities of Ottoman history only.

Later this month, the two doctors in their party will arrive and they will start work. They--along with a returning missionary named Alicia Wells--telegrammed that their ship was going to be delayed leaving Boston, and might then take a more roundabout course to avoid U‑boats. But whether the physicians are delayed two weeks or three might make all the difference in the world for some of the survivors who are brought here. These women, she presumes, will be long gone by then, marched back into the desert to one of the resettlement camps to the southeast. So will the group that is already in the square, the women and children who staggered in from the desert yesterday.

In the meantime, Elizabeth can’t imagine what in the name of God she--what anyone--can do for them. Still, after catching her breath, she and her father and the American consul decide that instead of spending lunch discussing the conditions in Aleppo and planning for the arrival of the rest of their group, they will follow these woeful deportees down the alley and into the square, and there see what they can do to help.

Ryan Martin leaves to find rags for the women to wear, but by the time he returns with a wagon of tattered dresses and blouses--remnants from the dead who have passed through Aleppo that summer--the newly arrived deportees already have been clothed by the other refugees. In the meantime, Elizabeth and a nurse from the hospital pick at the vermin on the women and clean the gaping wounds on their legs and ankles and feet. They ration the little calamine lotion and olive oil they have for those women whose sunburns have not seared deep into their flesh, and gently wash the wounds of those whose skin--especially on their shoulders and backs--has peeled off like a snake’s. Within minutes they finish off the one large bottle of iodine the nurse has brought. Elizabeth gives the deportees water and bowls of thin bulgur soup to eat, because it is all they can scare up at the moment. There may be bread tomorrow. She feels helpless. When she was given her nursing training back in Boston, no one prepared her for dysentery. For gangrene. For feet with bones splintered from weeks of walking barefoot, the toes and heels swollen and mangled and deformed.

Most of the women are clustered underneath makeshift tents--canvas pulled tight on tottering wooden poles--but there are more women than there is room, so they spread out beyond the tent when the sun is no longer overhead and there are long stripes of comforting black shade. The children--among whom the only males in this new group can be found--remind her of dead sea horses she once saw on the beach at Cape Cod: The children, like the sea horses, are curled up on their sides and their bones seem as brittle and sharp as the shells of the dried pipefish. Perhaps a quarter mile away is a hospital, primitive by Boston standards, but a hospital nonetheless. It infuriates Elizabeth that there is, apparently, no room for these women there, and so far not a single doctor has emerged from the building and offered to help. Ryan has tried to mollify her by telling her that the vast majority of the beds there are filled with Armenian women and children, but this reality too has left her seething inside.

The number of deportees who speak either English or French surprises Elizabeth, though most are too tired right now to talk. Nevertheless, there is a woman who looks to be in her fifties but Elizabeth suspects is actually half that age, who murmurs “thank you” in English as she takes the bowl of soup and brings it to her lips.

“You’re welcome,” Elizabeth says. “I wish it were a more substantial meal.”

The woman shrugs. “You’re American,” she observes, a statement. She is wearing a man’s shirt and a skirt that balloons around her like a sack.

“Yes. My name is Elizabeth.”

“I’m Nevart,” the Armenian offers, and Elizabeth carefully rolls the name around in her mind. A small girl sleeps beside the woman, the child’s collarbone rising and falling ever so slightly with each breath. Elizabeth guesses that she is seven or eight. “Where in America?” Nevart asks.

“Boston,” Elizabeth answers. “It’s in the state of Massachusetts.” The woman’s nails are as brown as her skin. “Sip that soup slowly,” she adds.

Nevart nods and places the bowl in her lap. “I know where Boston is,” she says. “I heard you speaking Armenian a minute ago. How much do you know?”

“A little. Very little, actually. I know mostly vocabulary. I know words, not grammar.” Then Elizabeth asks the woman, “How did you learn English?”

“My husband went to college in London. He was a doctor.”

Elizabeth thinks about this, imagining this wraith of a woman living in England. As if Nevart can read her mind, the deportee continues, “I wasn’t with him most of the time. I have been to London, but only for a visit.” She sighs and looks into Elizabeth’s eyes. “I’m not going to die,” she murmurs, and she almost sounds disappointed.

“No, of course, you won’t. I know that.” Elizabeth hopes she sounds reassuring. She honestly isn’t sure whether this woman will live.

“You’re just saying that. But I know it because I was a doctor’s wife. I have survived dysentery. Starvation. Dehydration. They . . . never mind what they did to me. I am still alive.”

“Is that your little girl?” Elizabeth asks.

The woman shakes her head. “No,” she answers, gently massaging the child’s neck. “This is Hatoun. Like me, she is unkillable.”

Elizabeth wants to ask about the woman’s husband, but she doesn’t dare. The man is almost certainly dead. Likewise, she wonders if Nevart has lost her children as well, but again she knows no good can come from this inquiry. Wouldn’t the Armenian have said something about her own children if they were with her now--if they were alive?

Over the woman’s shoulder Elizabeth spies her father in the distance. He is ladling out the soup from a black cauldron and handing it to the women strong enough to stand and bring it to those who are collapsed under the tent. His sideburns and his beard, so much thicker and grayer than the thin whorls of cinnamon atop his scalp, look almost white in this light. They are expecting flour and sugar and tea in the next day or so--the first of two shipments they have arranged this month--though Ryan has warned her father and her that it is likely only a small fraction of what they have acquired will actually arrive in Aleppo.

“Where do we go next?” Nevart asks her. “They brought us here, but they won’t let us stay.”

The Slaughter You Know Nothing About
By Free2Read
Chris Bohjalian seeks out difficult subjects. His novels are unique. His novels are passionate. His novels make the horror of violence in the world a series of human interactions. He does not use gratuitous violence. Instead, he puts forth the truth, offsetting the sickening carnage with characters who are changed and strengthened by bearing witness to man's inhumanity to man.

In "The Sandcastle Girls," Bohjalian takes us to Aleppo in 1915. A young American, Elizabeth Endicott, has come to assist the Armenian League of America with the thousands of refugees pouring into Syria from the genocide in Turkey. The Armenians who arrive are nearly dead. Elizabeth possesses few practical skills, except that she can write a discrete report and she is capable of handling some nursing duties, not flinching at blood or bed pans.

Elizabeth lives somewhat isolated in the American compound. In the city, the orphanage houses wild children who feed off those younger and weaker. The town square fills with women who have walked, now naked, across the desert. They are to be "relocated." No one can be trusted. The officials who say they will help, the quiet readers on a train, the casual guard in the street--danger is everywhere.

From this mind-numbing situation, Elizabeth grows into a new woman. She finds a man she loves. She journeys into primitive conditions to try to help those taken to the desert to die of starvation and the lack of water. She makes a foray into becoming a maternal figure, sheltering one woman and one child from the chaos all around her.

As the narrator says in "The Sandcastle Girls," "How do a million and a half people die with nobody knowing? -- You kill them in the middle of nowhere."

The information above may turn some readers away as too much of a downer for a summer read, too horrible. Yet, you should trust Bohjalian. He tells this story in such a way that yes, the violence is there. The gruesome deaths of women, children, babies, and the men fighting in the Dardanelles are all described. But there is hope. There is goodness. There are spirits of strength and family, and above all love. If ever a story proves a theme, so "The Sandcastle Girls" tells us that loves does prevail. The first-person narrator, Laura Petrosian, is a modern girl, seeking to understand her heritage. That she can tell her own story of awakening as she interweaves the history of the Armenian genocide is an absolutely amazing feat of storytelling.

Hats off to Bohjalian for his courage and his adeptness with a large cast of characters and a complicated plot. "Sandcastle" in the title may lead to some sales as a beach read, but this is not a book to lie in the sun and laze away an afternoon. It is a book that will inflame you to get involved in bringing peace and justice to all people of the world. Bring history into the light. Do not let history repeat itself. Never again.

A personal and moving story
By Bookreporter
THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS, Chris Bohjalian's 15th novel, covers a different territory from most of his other books, which usually feature his home state of Vermont. This moving multi-generational saga of an Armenian family is set on multiple continents and encompasses a century of tumultuous change and upheaval both in the world at large and in the lives of its protagonists. Like Bohjalian's previous works, THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS features ordinary, relatable characters caught up in events beyond their control.

Laura Petrosian, an obvious stand-in for the author himself, is a successful fortysomething American novelist in search of her roots, in particular those of her ancestors who fled the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Turks. The Armenians know this event as "Meds Yeghern," the Great Catastrophe. Laura's search is prompted by the discovery of a photograph of an emaciated woman in an exhibit of Armenian victims of the ethnic cleansing. She bears Laura's family name, so perhaps she is a relative of some sort. Laura, who has basically tolerated but has not embraced her grandfather's ethnic heritage thus far, is suddenly inspired to learn more about the events that shaped her Armenian ancestors' lives.

The novel travels back and forth in time between Laura's current-day search for her family's history and her American grandmother Elizabeth's introduction to Armenia nearly a century ago.

Twenty-one-year-old Elizabeth Endicott lands in Aleppo in what would become modern-day Syria in 1915 as World War I rages around the globe. She is freshly armed with a degree from Mt. Holyoke, a spattering of nursing know-how and a few words of Armenian and Turkish, and a naive optimism that she can do some good on behalf of the Boston-based organization, Friends of Armenia. Elizabeth and her wealthy banker father Silas are on a mission of mercy to aid Armenian Genocide victims, but neither of the Endicotts is fully prepared for the horrors they are about to witness: all the Armenian men have been killed by the Turks, and only emaciated women and children remain, to be force-marched to "refugee camps" in the sweltering Syrian desert where they are slowly and deliberately starved to death. Through the Endicotts, the reader is introduced to the full scope of the holocaust that butchered 1.5 million Armenian Christians --- three out of every four Armenians living at the time. This is an event in history that, although quite as brutal and horrific as the Jewish holocaust, has shockingly been mostly forgotten outside of the Armenian diaspora by now.

Soon after Elizabeth's arrival in Aleppo, she meets an enigmatic engineer by the name of Armen Petrosian. Elizabeth's time with Armen turns out to be fleeting as he soon escapes Aleppo to join the British Army's motley crew of Australian and Indian soldiers in the fight against the Turks. However, Armen finds himself compelled to write a series of letters to Elizabeth, who learns that he is fighting the Turks to avenge the deaths of his wife and baby daughter who were murdered in the ethnic cleansing. As the war engulfs the continent, Armen and Elizabeth come to realize their love for each other and are happily reunited.

However, even as Elizabeth prepares for her future with Armen, she discovers a tragic secret that she must take to the grave with her. Although the two lovers are able to create a new and comfortable life together in America, their marriage remains tinged with "sadness, secrets, and wistfulness" as seen through the eyes of their granddaughter Laura. Now Laura finally learns the family secret that has haunted her grandparents their entire lives.

Although THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS is centered on a romance, it is also a history lesson, and a riveting one at that. Bohjalian narrates a personal and moving story about an important historical event that people have largely forgotten. This is a sober, elegiac and touching novel that does not flinch away from depicting the depths of human suffering, but is also able to illuminate the human capacity for survival and resurgence.

Not a day at the beach

The Sandcastle Girls - Chris Bohjalian
3 stars

Once again, a story with two timelines; contemporary and historical. A twenty-first century novelist begins to explore her Armenian ancestry. Her research leads her to her grandparent's courtship and the Armenian genocide. The story line shifts between the actual events of 1915 and the contemporary discoveries of Laura Petrosian.

The 1915 story line was by far the most interesting. I liked Elizabeth Endicott and the other American characters. Bohjalian approaches the horror of the catastrophe from the perspective of these American relief workers who clearly don't know the extent of the disaster. I could feel their desperation when they began to realize the futility of their efforts. This was a very effective way to disclose the enormity of this crime.

It was so effective that I could not connect to any if the more trivial concerns of the characters. The love story seemed unlikely. The tragic coincidences and devastating secrets added drama to an overdramatic situation. The modern story just annoyed me as it interrupted the wartime narrative.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It did hold my interest and I learned more about the extent of the Armenian genocide. Unfortunately, I thought the storytelling was choppy. The two plot lines never came together coherently for me. I suspect that my impression of this book suffered because I'd recently read The Garden of Evening Mists. Both books deal with similar themes and situations. Tan Twan Eng did a far better job with multiple time lines and the themes of war and survival.

Modeling Materials: Continuum, Atomistic and Multiscale Techniques, by Ellad B. Tadmor, Ronald E. Miller

Material properties emerge from phenomena on scales ranging from Angstroms to millimeters, and only a multiscale treatment can provide a complete understanding. Materials researchers must therefore understand fundamental concepts and techniques from different fields, and these are presented in a comprehensive and integrated fashion for the first time in this book. Incorporating continuum mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, atomistic simulations and multiscale techniques, the book explains many of the key theoretical ideas behind multiscale modeling. Classical topics are blended with new techniques to demonstrate the connections between different fields and highlight current research trends. Example applications drawn from modern research on the thermo-mechanical properties of crystalline solids are used as a unifying focus throughout the text. Together with its companion book, Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics (Cambridge University Press, 2011), this work presents the complete fundamentals of materials modeling for graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science, chemistry and engineering.

Review
"This is an exceptional book on the subject, and for more than one reason. First, it is extremely well written. The authors are very clearly talented writers. The text is thought provoking, original and crystal clear (no pun is intended). Second, the book is quite attractive to the eye. It is full with pictures and illustrations, and their captions are very detailed. Only from looking at the figures and reading the captions one can learn a great deal. The important equations appear in a "shaded" box. The whole appearance of the book is very inviting to read."

Excellent effort
By parmenides
This is an outstanding effort for exposing the principles of multiscale modeling. Multiscale modeling is as old
as statistical physics, moreover, even continuum mechanics problems such as fracture and turbulence required
the development of multiscale modeling ideas. So what is the the point of modern "multiscale modeling" idea?
It is mostly connecting different physics theories within the same code. So it is not just a physics but also
a numerics and (even more) an informatics challenge.

The book is an excellent source of material about the most basic mathematical theories of classical, statistical
and quantum physics applied to materials (but one can use the same ideas also in fluids and other systems).
Combining so many mathematical theories in one book is a challenge by itself. What makes this effort so successful
and above other similar efforts is that the packaging is done in fine mathematical detail, i.e. the authors have worked very hard for this book. It wont let anyone down. They first discuss the aforementioned fundamental theories and in the last part of the book they describe how the actual packaging of different theories is done in actual material modeling computations.

Everything is not perfect of course and this is expected without taking any value from this effort. For example, in their discussion of quantum mechanics and DFT methods I found some necessary mathematical fine points missing.
There was also no mention of relativistic DFT. I would read this part together with books such as Jorge Kohanoff's
"Electronic structure calculations for solids and molecules" and "Introduction to Relativistic Quantum Chemistry"
by Dyall and Faegri. The point is however, that equiped with just the material of this book one already has a very good picture
of DFT and related methods. Same is true for the other parts. There is not much emphasis on computing/algorithmic or numerical analysis aspects. One needs separate books for adequate detail on these.
Finally, I was impressed by the many historical references and the citation of the original atomic theory of Democritus was amazing!

Congratulations for CUP for producing such excellent and well thought books. Apparently, CUP and quality mathematical
physics are highly corellated notions nowdays. Indeed, presently, most self-advertised textbooks/monographs are in reality
surveys i.e. long review papers. As such they are useless to the one who wants to learn "how to do", as for the specialist
he can find them on journals or archives. It is quite difficult to produce proper books whose authors have taken
the time to actually work out the details i.e. produce science and not surveys. CUP produces such books worth having and spending money on. Indeed, there is no doubt that the present book does exactly what it promises. Warmly recommended.

Review for Modeling Materials: Continuum, Atomistic and Multiscale Techniques
By Xiaomei Ji
The subject matter in this book is divided into four parts. Part I covers continuum mechanics and thermodymics concepts that sever as the basis for the rest of the book. The description of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics is brief and meant to make this book a stand-alone book. Part II covers atomistics, discussing the basic structure and symmetries of crystalline materials, and molecular statics-a computational approach for studying static properties of materials at the atomic scale. Part III focuses on the connection are forged between the discrete world of atoms-described by atomic positions, velocities and forces- and continuum concepts such as fields of stress and temperature. Finally, the subject of molecular dynamics is presented. Part IV on multiscale methods describes a class of computational methods that attempt to model material response by simultaneously describing its behavior on multiple
spatial and temporal scales. The final part of the book draws together and unifies many of the concepts presented earlier and shows how these can be integrated into a single modeling paradigm.

It shows at first, different treatment in the principles of multiscale modeling, focusing on a critical analysis and understanding of the fundamental assumptions, which is essential for anyone seeking to combine different theories in a multiscale setting.
Secondly, some of the topics herein are often treated from the perspective of the gaseous or liquid states, but, in this book, its emphasis is on solids. and this changes the presentation in important ways. Similarly, it works for constant stress simulation in molecular dynamics.
Third, while covering this board range of topics the authors strive to regularly make connections between the atomistic, statistical and continuum worldviews. Finally, a good balance between fundamental theory and practical ``how to'' is tried to created.
Combining many mathematical theories in one book is a big challenge by itself.
The book has effectively combined the important mathematical theories, empirical methods
and the practical implementation of such topics. For the most part, these serve as examples to illustrate the application and usefulness of modeling methods.

As far as modeling goes, the fact must be recognized that the materials exhibit phenomena on a board range of spatial and temporal scales that combine together to dictate the response of a material. These phenomena range from the bonding of individual atoms governed by quantum mechanics to macroscopic deformation process described by continuum mechanics. Various aspects of materials behavior and modeling, which tends to focus on specific phenomena at a given scale, have traditionally been treated by different disciplines in science and engineering. There is increased awareness that materials must be understood, not only by rigorous treatment of phenomena at each of these scales alone, but rather through consideration of the interactions between these scales.

This excellent book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in chemistry, engineering, materials science, mathematics, mechanics and physics. It is very suitable for people in such fields who want to study advanced achievements in modeling materials.

Wow, how did I miss this!
By MSE fanatic
This textbook is a must for anyone doing modeling/computational materials science. This book is very similar and on par with Rob Phillips Crystals, Defects, and Microstructures Modeling Across Scales but adds a little more "hands-on" for the student. To date I have yet to find a textbook which covers interatomic potentials like this one. The authors provide complete derivations of interaction energy, and even forces, for pairwise and manybody potentials. Since this is the most crucial aspect of any molecular statics/dynamics simulation, its nice to have a thorough reference at hand. In general the text is well written and nicely formatted with useful example problems and exercises in most chapters. The multiscale aspects are predominantly focused on coupling mechanics of materials which probably reflects the authors backgrounds and research interest. Although the price might be steep this is a nice text to supplement other computational materials science textbooks that I have reviewed.

Excellent Introduction
By Edward Mariyani-Squire
This is a very good introduction to the discipline of political economy (broadly defined).

The book takes a 'pluralist' approach in the sense that it gives fairly even quantities of space to distinct 'schools' of thought in political economy (cum economics), and seeks to fairly outline the core concepts and arguments of each school. This is not to say the book is 'relativistic' or 'intellectually permissive' - it does give over space to well-established criticisms of each school. That said, it simultaneously extends the principle of intellectual charity to each of them. Prima facie, there is no 'axe-grinding' going on here.

The book seems to be pitched at university students (and perhaps advanced high school students) who have had little or no contact with political economy as an academic discipline before. As such, it has the great virtue of being very clearly written in a non-technical, relatively jargon-free style.

I would recommend this book to anyone studying political economy (compulsory reading), political science (compulsory reading), sociology (compulsory reading), economics (complementary reading), philosophy (bed-time reading).

The book takes a 'pluralist' approach in the sense that it gives fairly even quantities of space to distinct 'schools' of thought in political economy (cum economics), and seeks to fairly outline the core concepts and arguments of each school: neoclassicism (orthodoxy), Marxism, Institutionalism, Keynesianism, Post-Keynesianism. This is not to say the book is 'relativistic' or 'intellectually permissive' - it does give over space to well-established criticisms of each school. That said, it simultaneously extends the principle of intellectual charity to each of them.

The book also introduces issues of concern from a political economy perspective: inequality, environmental issues, economic crisis and the like.

The book seems to be pitched at university students (and perhaps advanced high school students) who have had little or no contact with political economy as an academic discipline before. As such, it has the great virtue of being very clearly written in a non-technical, relatively jargon-free style.

Michelangelo: Complete WorksFrom Taschen

Il divino: A glorious exploration of Michelangelo’s works   Before reaching the tender age of 30, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) had already sculpted David and Pietà, two of the most famous sculptures in the entire history of art. As a sculptor, painter, draftsman, and architect, the achievements of this Italian master are unique—no artist before or after him has ever produced such a vast, multifaceted, and wide-ranging œuvre.

This comprehensive book explores Michelangelo’s life and work with a richly illustrated biographical essay, and a complete four-part inventory of his paintings, sculptures, buildings, and drawings. Full-page reproductions and enlarged details allow readers to appreciate fine details in the artist’s vast repertoire, while the book’s biographical insights consider a previously unseen extent to Michelangelo’s more personal traits and circumstances, such as his solitary nature, his thirst for money and commissions, his immense wealth, and his skill as a property investor. In addition, the book tackles the controversial issue of the attribution of Michelangelo drawings, an area in which decisions continue to be steered by the interests of the art market and the major collections.

This is the definitive work about Michelangelo for generations to come, to be delved into and put on display, with its slipcase neatly converting into a book stand.

A great book!
By Judith Waters
Heavy book but it has a neat little contraption that when you bend the cardboard slipcover according to the directions, it forms a stand to view the book. No, we have not read it cover to cover. It's huge. But it's a real plus that we can leave it open to browse on the coffee table. Excellent photos, bright colors. The pages aren't flimsy so they're easy to turn.

Michelangelo's collected works, produced by Taschen
By DJ the BOSS
This is certainly the book on the great Michelangelo. Taschen does it again. It may weigh some, but worth the effort. The illustrations are the best you can get without actually visiting the Sistine Chapel or the Bargello or St Peters. I am just back from visiting Italy and I had planned to buy the book once I came home, and it just elevates your experience, believe me. What makes it even better is the excellent scholarship and is simply written, ideal for student and layman alike. If you are interested in knowing how the western consciousness evolved culturally through the medium of art, this is what you must have, and it's not expensive for the ideas it conveys and for its timelessness.

By Aleta Ricciardi
For sheer stunning brilliance this collection is unbeatable. Considering the ridiculous crowds that surround M's works on public display, the distance from the human eyeball to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and protective casing around other of his artwork, this may be the only way (other than being a conservator) of seeing any detail whatsoever. The text is dense and interesting (although holding the book to read it is nontrivial).

The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript, by Nicholas C. Zakas

If you've used a more traditional object-oriented language, such as C++ or Java, JavaScript probably doesn't seem object-oriented at all. It has no concept of classes, and you don't even need to define any objects in order to write code. But don't be fooled—JavaScript is an incredibly powerful and expressive object-oriented language that puts many design decisions right into your hands.

In The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript, Nicholas C. Zakas thoroughly explores JavaScript's object-oriented nature, revealing the language's unique implementation of inheritance and other key characteristics. You'll learn:

  • The difference between primitive and reference values
  • What makes JavaScript functions so unique
  • The various ways to create objects
  • How to define your own constructors
  • How to work with and understand prototypes
  • Inheritance patterns for types and objects

The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript will leave even experienced developers with a deeper understanding of JavaScript. Unlock the secrets behind how objects work in JavaScript so you can write clearer, more flexible, and more efficient code.

I really liked this book
By WDM
I give The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas C. Zakas a rating of 5 stars. This book deserves no less with its concise nature and very well explained concepts.

First off, I must mention that this book is not intended for beginners. Object Oriented Programming (OOP) takes a different approach in the JavaScript language. In order to fully grasp the content of this book, it is highly recommended that you have a good understanding of OOP concepts and have developed an OOP vocabulary. My suggestion is to first learn a solid OOP language like Java or C++ first before beginning with this book. Just knowing JavaScript alone may not be enough.

I previously mentioned that this book is concise. Weighing in at 92 pages, it's a featherweight in the realm of programming books. You might think it should take more pages to cover such an advanced topic as OOP in JavaScript. But, as exemplified in this book, that is certainly not the case.

The topics in this book are covered just enough to get a good understanding of them. Furthermore, as you progress through the book, what you learn early on will be used again in a later section. So, what you learn in Chapter 1 will be used throughout the rest of the book. Each chapter builds upon the previous one. As you work through the examples, you will get plenty of practice of the things you previously learned.

The author's writing is very easy to read. It's not easy to find a programming book that is so well written. The author does a very good job of not going beyond the scope of the current topic. Furthermore, he sticks to a consistent vocabulary that should be quite familiar with readers familiar to OOP principles.

I can honestly say that this book has improved my understanding of JavaScript. After reading it, I was able to understand why the syntax of JQuery and AngularJS works, instead of just memorizing how to write the code. Those two libraries have some interesting syntax that might look foreign to someone who doesn't understand how JavaScript deals with objects. Because it has been so useful to me, I plan to keep a copy of this book in my personal library.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of OOP in JavaScript. If you have experience with OOP through another language such as Java and C++, then this book can certainly enrich your JavaScript coding practices. This was my personal experience with The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript.

Great intro to Javascript for OO programmers
By dustmouse
I needed to learn JavaScript quickly for a project at work, coming from a .NET background. This book was perfect. These days I spend more time with JavaScript than .NET and I'm truly enjoying it. I'm still impressed by how much information Zakas could pack into this scrawny (less than 100 pages) book.

I singled out this book because of the title, and was not disappointed. Javascript can be pretty daunting at the outset (if you come from the strongly-typed world), but once you get the hang of it, it feels quite liberating.

This book definitely helped me understand how OO can be implemented in Javascript. Strongly recommended.

Nice Overview of Key Parts of the JavaScript Language
By Charlie Calvert
This is a concise and very helpful book that describes many key aspects of the JavaScript language in clear, easy to understand language.

Two points:

1) Crockford's classic "JavaScript the Good Parts" can help you understand why JavaScript is a tricky language, but I find this book more useful when I simply want to understand how the language works and how it should be used. After reading it, some of the more complex parts of Crockford's book were much easier to understand.

2) There are many fancy things you can do with JavaScript and functional programming that are not covered in this book. But if you are coming from an object oriented language like C# or Java, and you are trying to get a handle on JavaScript, you might well find this book invaluable.

The text is clean and easy to understand, and yet it is not simplistic. This is not a book for someone trying to learn how to program, but instead for good programmers who are trying to understand JavaScript. Zakas has written a number of books on JavaScript, each a bit better than the last. By the time he go to writing this one, he knew more or less exactly what he wanted to say, and how to say it.
