About the Author

Patricia J. Benjamin, PhD, NCTMB, is a licensed massage

therapist, educator, author, and appreciative massage and

bodywork client. She has a deep respect for massage therapy

as an art, science, and wellness practice. She has studied

its traditions and watches for trends in the massage

therapy profession today.

Building on her earlier background in sports and fitness,

Dr. Benjamin graduated from the Chicago School of

Massage Therapy in the mid-1980s. She was drawn to massage

as an active, hands-on therapy whose foundations

dovetail with her former career in health, physical education,

and recreation.After having a full-time massage therapy

practice, she gravitated back to education, first as an

association education director, and then as a teacher and

massage school administrator. Over the years, she has

served on various committees involved in the development

of ethical standards and national certification for massage

therapists, and the accreditation of massage programs.

Dr. Benjamin has taught at the high school and college

levels, and enjoys developing curriculum materials for the

career-oriented courses offered in vocational programs.

She holds master’s and advanced study degrees in education

with a specialty in curriculum development from

Northern Illinois University. A doctorate in recreation

and leisure studies from Purdue University has deepened

her appreciation of the many facets of wellness and

grounded her in a variety of research methods.

Frances M.Tappan approached Patricia Benjamin to

join her as coauthor of Healing Massage Techniques for its

3rd edition (1998). Since Dr.Tappan’s passing in 1999,

Dr. Benjamin has continued to update and improve

Tappan’s Handbook of Healing Massage Techniques, and it

remains a standard in the field today. Dr. Benjamin

authored Professional Foundations for Massage Therapists

(2009) as a resource for students to learn about the profession,

its history, varied competencies, ethics, and business

practices.

In her leisure time, Dr. Benjamin enjoys reading historical

fiction and nonfiction, gardening, tai chi and qi

gong, Zen archery, and swimming. Her outdoor pursuits

include hiking, canoeing, and a new interest in birding.

She currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.

Good for school

The book has basic coverage of various massage techniques and modalities. It is good to have for the school study or for the test prep. you can effectively but fast to review massage techniques. If you working on something more specific than general massage, you would need a more specific book. I am glad I had it for school, but I don't think there is any reason to keep it on the shelf any more.

Very Little Useful Information for PT

I did not find the information useful in learning manual therapies. It was very basic information that can be easily found on quick google searches. The only compliment I have regarding the purchase is that the videos are replicas of the chapters, so if you watch the videos, there is no need to read the chapters.

Best Elvis Book Ever

This is the best Elvis book I have ever read and I have read many.most Elvis books have a small mention of Elvis's grandmother and his aunt Delta but Nancy tells us a lot about these two strong women. I really liked learning more about them also Nancy goes into great detail about Elvis and his last days. I also enjoyed the stories about the strange things that went on in Graceland after Elvis died. Nancy also mentions Lisa's marriages. and tells us a little about that this is just a very very interesting book on Elvis as well as the Presley family. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!

A great read...hard to put down!

Unlike many other books on Elvis, this one seems very genuine and authentic with no agenda other than to share memories of life Inside Graceland. Rather than a slick, professionally written biography, the style of writing feels as if you were sitting down over a cup of coffee with Nancy as she remembers the years she spent working in Graceland - unstructured and unpolished....just as thoughts pop into her head. There are many interesting little tidbits and details she offers that really humanize Elvis and bring him to life as a real person instead of a celebrity. The personalities and interaction of all members of the family really come out. A pure joy to read - thanks Nancy!

Excellent inside view, but not enough

Nancy Rooks comes across as an innocent and largely credible witness to Elvis's life at Graceland. I wondered, just a bit, how much her loyalty to Elvis might have resulted in omitting some information.

Describing the roles of Aunt Delta and Grandma Presley help to fill out the story of Elvis's home life as presented in other books. Nancy accounts for her own experiences, almost autobiographically. In a sense, she is that fly on the wall that we wished we could have been at Graceland. Most important is her account of Elvis's death. You see her perspective as she watches people rushing through the kitchen. The book has a diary-like nature, laid down as though she were dictating her experiences to a scribe, which in large measure she was.

Unfortunately, the book is small and only 149 pages long. There should have been much more. Page numbering starts with the title page, a telltale sign that the book is too short. A half-page table of contents is provided, 16 pages of poor quality photographs, and 143 pages of text divided into ten chapters.

Don't go to a used car lot without it

Purchased a clean Plymouth Breeze for my son after his HS graduation. Spent a day at the used car lots and having this baby in my hip pocket was invaluable. Some of the asking prices from the used car con artists were a joke. I purchased the Breeze at top of Kelly Blue Book which was actually a good deal. I think low blue book is not a realistic value.

At last a Craniosacral book that puts it all together with clarity

I gave this book a 5 star rating . I gave it this number because it is one of the very few books on Craniosacral Therapy that addresses a number of topics that often are not often discussed and should be because of their practical importance in the clinic .
The word integration says it all . For many years the great Myofascial Release teacher John Barnes has long stated that CST is best combined with Myofascial release for better results . This is not covered in a lot of CST books. This book has considerable chapter on this subject and demonstrates it's relativity to good CST work . In other words for treating a number of clinic problems the treatment must be integrated and a variety of approaches may be applicable .
There are great chapters on topics such as T4 syndrome and autonomic nervous system integration. These subjects may be touched upon by other CST books but not in a clear or succinct way that is depicted in this book . The chapters are clear and set out in a logical manner and a great deal of effort has been put into describing how the practitioner should set the scene to approach treating clients . Attlee has pitched this book as a book that can be used as a foundation primer for anyone starting learning CST work. I like the book because he covers different aspects of the work such as biomechanics,energy , emotional ,Fascial and biodyamic. He is not just stuck in one approach .
I would thoroughly recommend this book as the first book for a beginning CST therapist or student and as a good review for those who who are practitioners . Certainly is is going to be on our required reading list for our Craniosacral Therapy Academy of Australia

Very Disappointed!!

What A Disappointment!

I picked up this book looking for the opportunities ahead in the wellness industry, and frankly didn't find any, except for what the author is selling- Wellness Insurance. He promotes it in every chapter and then refers the reader to his website. It gets old. Is it a MLM? It sure feels like a high pressure pitch. Just when you think you're about to get a good tip on a new business opportunity, it's his insurance again.

I'm already sold on the wellness aspect of living and already am a client of alternative practitioners. So other than an economic lesson about how we got to this point, there's not much else except how other people have made it big in the beginning of this trend. He promotes the story of Silk soy milk, which I have since been told not to drink because of soy's dubious qualities, Boca Burger as well as other vegetarian food producers, and mostly other doctors that have since turned to the wellness side of the health care business, like Dr. Mercola and his website, which I value as a source for up to the date wellness information.

Like another reviewer, I find Pilzer's knowledge to be dated in the area of holistic health.

So where are the NEW opportunities? He seems to outline only the old ones, except his wellness insurance of course. This book might have been enlightening when it first came out in 2002, but I think it's old news now in 2008. Even then, I don't see a great deal of opportunities being proposed. The only "revised and expanded" areas of the book are him taking the opportunity to sell his own products to the reader.

I give it 2 stars for explaining the history of where we are today. If you are looking for the future opportunities in the wellness industry- it's not here.

Have You Revolutionized Your Health Today?

According to Paul Zane Pilzer, the next new Trillion Dollar Trend is Health and Wellness. Paul does a brilliant job explaining what this phenomenon is and more importantly "Why" it is taking place. At the time this book came out, health and wellness was already a $200 billion dollar industry. It's now more than double that!

Paul talks about the opportunities that are available for entrepreneurs, investors and distributors. After each chapter, he has a list of insightful, thought-provoking questions that you should ask yourself before pursuing any opportunity in this industry.

What I didn't expect from this book is that it actually gave some sound health advice too!

For example, on Page 64 he states that as a preventative measure, drinking 5 glasses of water each day decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent, the risk of breast cancer by 79 percent, and the risk of bladder cancer by 50 percent! Now, I drink that much if not more, but I had no idea how beneficial drinking water (assuming it's filtered and/or purified) can be!

In another example he talks about it the danger of drinking cow's milk on Page 81. Did you know that the difference between "low-fat or 2% milk" verses regular whole milk is only 1%?!! Whole milk contains 3% fat by weight. I had no clue.

He also states that contrary to popular opinion, drinking milk actually CAUSES osteoporosis as well as allergies, gas, constipation, obesity, cancer, heart disease and a host of other infectious diseases. Even better, he talks about a much healthier alternative to cow's milk.

Anyone who is passionate about health and wellness and who has a desire to build wealth would greatly benefit from reading this book. It was such an easy-to-read, informative and inspirational book, that I finished reading it in 2 days! It validated the decision that I had already made to pursue opportunities in health and wellness.

Now, I don't normally give a lot of 5 star ratings, but Paul Zane Pilzer truly earned it with this book!

What I like most is that it speaks to the transference within ...

I found this to be a well-done more or less summary account of the basics of transference as a healing variant of the human relationship. What I like most is that it speaks to the transference within the context of Jungian analytical psychotherapy, which by emergence and design, often tends to avoid more definitive issues of analytic technique. This book is a quick, clear read that offers practical ideas for managing aspects of the psychotherapeutic interaction.

Professional Competence: Narcissistic Disorders

"The Analytic Encounter: Transference and Human Relationship" is much more than a handbook or text about professional morals and ethics; rather, it is a concentrated, compact series of essays about human symbolic interactionism.
Mario Jacoby, through the Inner City Books publications, offers introductory lessons in general human behavior and the observing self along with the professional emphasis of the psychological and/or psychotheraputic practice. My reading experiences of Inner City Books leads me to believe that they make it a point to provide a publishing service that gives quality value in the psychological transaction; i.e., you get more than what you paid for in the analytic encounter.
In simplicity, there is complexity. One need only read between the lines of the text for a multitude of "interconnections" to truly appreciate the "sage advice" from "Herr Director." The unfortunate part of most analytical psychologies revolves around the more or less "obscure language" usage of medical and/or psychoanalytical terminology. Respectfully, I think Mario Jacoby makes a "sure-footed" effort to reverse this situation by explaining psychoanalytic human interactions in a polite...but somewhat, parochial fashion...for the layman as well.
Reportedly, Freud was very much interested in "slips of the tongue," and in "jokes"...of which there is a never ending supply coming from the human mind. Grimly, what you do in the professional work place can have overwhelming and long term repercussions. In the professional arena of expertise, we are all "interconnected" in or through the everyday analytic encounter; with this in mind, one can safely deduce why medical malpractice insurance is so expensive to everyone.
Candidly, I highly recommmend this handbook to all practicing professionals who deal with the public in a private way; especially, to attorneys and/or lawyers who also touch the deeper psychological issues, emotional problems, and narcissistic disorders and predicaments of human life; especially, for those who deal in divorces and trust involvements.
Perhaps the "obscurity" issues of medical psychiatry, psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, and self-object psychology grew out of the "darkened views" of a cloistered cellular priesthood and its overcontrol and domination of human psyhcosocial and sexual activities. Human sexuality was not exactly the strongest domain for those who lived secluded in denial; yet, as Dr. Inman thought, parochial symbolism was only a more glorified and disguised sexuality in religious issues and rituals...and so it is the world over in differing ways. To say that Western Civilization is or has been inhibited with regards to missionary human sexuality...would be an understatement.
Transference and Countertransference may very well be a polite and disguised way of discussing the detailed machinations of the "sex-lust-love-money" connections of human and business involvements. Should one become deeply interested in an in-depth and multi-layered approach to transference and countertransference, I suggest the transactional "Parent, Adult, Child" analytic studies of Eric Berne and Thomas A. Harris...End of dream.
