Lots of inspirational ideas. . .
By C. White
I read this book just before Christmas, so there wasn't time to incorporate Denise Wamsley's ideas in 2010. Now I can hardly wait to try them in 2011! I loved this book. It was quick and easy to read, with loads of ideas for ways to make your family's Christmas more focused on Christ. Very motivational and inspirational! Even though my children are grown up and on their own now, I plan to use the ideas for myself and my husband---and also when the family comes home for Christmas. I bought copies to give to each of my children, in hopes that they too will be able to avoid the commercial trap and stress of Christmas by today's standards. If you buy this book, I'm sure you'll find many ideas that will be perfect for your family--no matter what stage of life you are in. It will make your Christmas' of the future better than they've ever been.

"Doing" Christmas Better
By Deborah Balzotti
We've all tried to "do" Christmas better. We read the books and articles about simplifying and refocusing (when we can find the time) and try to copy our perfect neighbors. And every year no matter how early we start we'll never be organized enough to pull off the perfect Christmas.

Reading "The Christmas Experiment" by Denise Wamsley provides an opportunity for personal reevaluation. Christmas celebration has become more commercialized and more complicated with every year. If you need to have more peace and joy during the season and less stress and discord, even changing one thing can make a difference. Wamsley wisely suggests customizing our Christmas to include bringing our family closer to Jesus Christ.

The author shares her journey to Bethlehem in book format after fifteen years of verbally teaching six lessons to help put Christ back into Christmas.
1. Simplify gift giving
2. Give all year
3. create meaningful family experiences
4. Serve one another
5. Teach with symbolism
6. enjoy quality traditions.

The author wisely cautions us not to fill our "inn" with presents and parties until it is so overcrowded we risk turning away The Holy Family. When Mary and Joseph seek lodging for the Christ Child will you have room in your home?

It's not too late to read this book before Christmas, but it would be even better to buy it now but read it after the decorations are put away. When that nagging little voice surfaces whispering you could have done it better, take a break, open your "inn doors" and consider Wamsley's advice.

Jazz: An American Journey places jazz music within its rich historical and cultural context. The book explains how and why jazz evolved as it did, as it emphasizes chronology, historical cause and effect, and the interactions between music and American history and culture.

Presented from the point of view of the original participants (musicians, critics, and audiences), the book focuses on the music with fifty-five recorded examples that are accompanied by a listening chart, commentary, and analysis, all to provide a more vivid setting for jazz grounded in the time, place, and worldview of its creators.

Features
  • Historical, political, cultural, and economic context for each stylistic period presented helps students understand how jazz relates to larger currents in American history, politics, and culture.
  • Contemporary Voices and Great Debates—Contemporary Voices boxes contain quotations from people who lived during the period being discussed. Great Debates boxes summarize important controversies among jazz critics and scholars.
  • Maps highlight important cities, regions, communities, and venues in jazz history to orient students to the geographical landscape of jazz.
  • Matters of race, gender, and economic forces addressed directly—for example, how black ideologies shaped musical development; contributions made by white musicians; and the widely ignored role of women in jazz.

This textbook grew out of an assignment I received several years ago to teach a jazz history course for nonmusic majors. General Education guidelines encouraged teachers to place their subjects within broad humanistic settings, to help students make connections with historical events they may have studied elsewhere, and to reveal cultures relevant to the topic being addressed. When asked if jazz history could be taught in this way, I responded affirmatively. Studying jazz in context uncovers relationships with economics, politics, and other social dimensions, particularly at the site of watershed historical events—the Great Migration of southern blacks to northern cities, World War I and World War II, the Great Depression, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, among others. Students' understanding of jazz should illuminate many aspects of twentieth-century culture they encounter in other courses.

Moreover, the emphasis on context makes it possible to see how social conditions gave birth to musical style. It helps to know, for instance, that the defining paradigms of Booker T. Washington and W E. B. Du Bois established basic attitudes toward race throughout the century. These attitudes decisively affected the evolution of jazz style, particularly its transformation from entertainment to art. Such connections can be made all along the line: vaudeville inspired the antic quality of much early jazz, the ability to hire more musicians for less money supported the rise of big bands during the Depression, the drive by American blacks for political freedom in the early sixties found its counterpart in free jazz, and so forth.

The conviction that jazz can and should be presented within a vivid historical setting reflects the direction of much jazz scholarship of recent years. But as I began examining materials to use in the class, I realized that few textbooks attempted to provide such a setting. Most were concerned to present a more or less abstract evolution of musical style, occasionally addressing historical issues, but more often discussing the players and composers from critical perspectives outside the time periods being treated. Seeing the need for a survey that would tell the story of jazz holistically, situating the music within its natural home in American history and culture, I embarked upon this book. I hope the results of my efforts prove helpful to others who teach jazz in the university as well.

I have organized the book into fifteen-year segments that correspond roughly to fundamental changes in both American society and jazz. This chronology is divided into six parts: Origins, Early Jazz, Swing, Bop, Free jazz to Fusion, and Postmodern Jazz (see Contents). Each part begins with a chapter on historical context to introduce the period. Additionally, most chapters open with a brief section on historical and cultural setting. The first part, Origins (c. 1900-1914), discusses the social conditions among African Americans that led to the rise of jazz, the influence of ragtime and the blues, and the formative role of New Orleans. The second part, Early Jazz (c. 1914-1929), treats the development of early jazz in Chicago and New York, the emergence of Louis Armstrong, and so forth.

Each chapter has pedagogical aids to further illuminate the subject. These include Contemporary Voices boxes containing quotations from people who lived during the period in question, boxes titled Great Debates summarizing important controversies among jazz critics and scholars, and Chronology boxes listing influential events—both musical and otherwise—for individual parts. Other boxes treat record labels, venues, and offstage personalities. One unique feature of this book is a series of historical maps indicating regions, cities, communities, and venues that proved especially hospitable to jazz. Period photographs, album covers, and cartoons give a visual sense of the attitudes and customs that surrounded the music. Birth and death dates in parentheses mark the first substantive mention of significant figures, and important names and terms are highlighted in the text.

Context, of course, has no purpose without a text. The "text" for this book is a series of fifty-five outstanding jazz recordings collected in an available three-CD set. Most of the recordings are classics in that they represent leading musicians' best or most influential work according to longstanding critical consensus. Indeed, a third of the selections are taken from the now-defunct Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, a widely used anthology before its discontinuance several years ago. Some of the more recent recordings have not yet had the chance to stand the test of time and thus reflect a more subjective selection process. Some recordings were chosen to represent a particular style; others to strata a historical pattern. (For instance, Charlie Barnet's "Cherokee," from the Swing Era, should help prepare students to understand Charlie Parker's "Koko," a modern jazz treatment of the "Cherokee" chord progression.) Many recordings are discussed in detail, and thirty-five are represented visually in a Listening Chart (see below). The twenty recordings without listening charts provide students the opportunity to create their own diagrams of the music. In addition to the three-CD recording set, this book can be packaged at no extra cost with the Prentice Hall Jazz Collection, a single CD compiled by David Cutler.

Together, the two anthologies contain sixty-seven outstanding jazz recordings. Because this book is designed for nonmusicians, I have omitted musical notation and overly technical musical analysis. However, the Introduction includes a discussion of musical elements—melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, dynamics, and form—and establishes a basic vocabulary of musical terms which appear frequently in later chapters.

This book presents the history of jazz in narrative form, emphasizing chronology, cause and effect, and the human dramas that contributed td the shaping of musical style. As much as possible, I have tried to relate the story of jazz from the point of view of the original participants, often quoting the musicians, critics, promoters, and audiences that lived at the time the music was being made. Occasionally, later critical perspectives are used to show how a particular artist is viewed today or to contrast early and late views of the music. More typically, I have tried to avoid anachronisms in order to portray the development of jazz as faithfully as possible in historical terms.

As an introduction to jazz history, this book is not intended to be a definitive or comprehensive treatment. Accordingly, I have attempted to do more with less—to discuss fewer musicians in greater detail or within a richer historical context. The book devotes a full chapter to each of five seminal figures: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. Less influential musicians are treated in chapters on various styles or movements (bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, etc.). In keeping with them leading role, black players receive the most attention, but white musicians are not overlooked. The part on Swing, for instance, contains a chapter on white bands led by Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Charlie Barnet. The contributions of women to jazz have been limited but powerful within their area of concentration. In the first chapter on singing—the one arena dominated by women—I assess the role of women in jazz generally. The book addresses styles and genres occasionally slighted in other histories, including contemporary big bands, Latin jazz, soul jazz, neo-bop, smooth jazz, acid jazz, and world fusion. Three chapters are devoted to jazz after 1975.

At this point perhaps a word of explanation is in order about the title—Jazz: An American Journey. I do not mean to imply that only Americans played or listened to jazz. Indeed, jazz bands in locations as farflung as Europe and Australia date back to the 1920s at least. Nor did Americans numerically outweigh jazz musicians and audiences from other countries; quite the contrary, in fact. But I don't believe it can be disputed that Americans both invented and developed jazz in all its major stylistic manifestations. The vast majority of innovative performers lived and worked primarily in the United States. Many books have been and will be written telling the story of jazz in other countries (a story that is arousing new and compelling interest with regard to exciting musical developments taking place in those countries today). But this book, as an introduction to the subject, dwells on the most historically influential figures in jazz history—the figures, mostly American, that largely set the standard for the rest of the world. Thus, our journey together will be primarily an American journey, focusing on people, places, and events that took place within the United States.

Like many textbooks, this one relies heavily on the scholarship and interpretations of other writers. I benefited from the work of many experts on individual musicians and bands: Lawrence Gushee on Jelly Roll Morton, Mark Tucker and John Hasse on Duke Ellington, Jeffrey Magee on Fletcher Henderson, Jeffrey Taylor on Earl Hines, Richard Sudhalter on Bix Beiderbecke, Ross Firestone on Benny Goodman, Vladimir Simosko on Artie Shaw, John Chilton on Sidney Bechet and Coleman Hawkins, Lewis Porter on Lester Young, Stuart Nicholson, Donald Clarke, and Leslie Gourse on Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, Alyn Shipton on Dizzy Gillespie, Carl Woideck on Charlie Parker, Ted Gioia on Dave Brubeck, Gary Giddins on the Modern Jazz Quartet, Nick Catalano on Clifford Brown, Gene Santoro on Charles Mingus, Jack Chambers on Miles Davis, John Litweiler on Ornette Coleman, Peter Pettinger on Bill Evans, Eric Nisensen and Lewis Porter on John Coltrane, Donald L. Maggin on Stan Getz, Leslie Gourse on Joe Williams and Wynton Marsalis. I also learned much from authorities on peribds and styles. Scott DeVeaux's landmark work, The Birth of Bebop: A Musical and Social History, provided the historical basis for much of the material on swing and early modern jazz. In addition, I would like to acknowledge the work of Gunther Schuller and William Howland Kenney on early jazz, Schuller and David W Stowe on swing, Richard Sudhalter on white jazz, Ted Gioia on West Coast jazz, David H. Rosenthal and Kenny Mathieson on hard bop and soul jazz, John Litweiler, Ekkehard Jost, and A. B. Spellman on free jazz, John Roberts Storm on Latin jazz, and Stuart Nicholson on jazz-rock and neo-bop.

I am grateful to Chris Johnson at Prentice Hall, who encouraged me to write the book in the first place, and to my production and copy editor Laura Lawrie, who shepherded the project to its completion. I thank the anonymous readers who reviewed the manuscript, as well as the colleagues, friends, and family members who read and commented on portions of the work: Ian Bent, Steve Call, Herbert Harker, Rand Harker, Scott Harker, and Steven Johnson. Michael Hicks read the entire manuscript and helped in many other ways besides. Thanks to my father, Herbert Harker, who drew the maps. I am grateful to Hans Klarer for allowing me to tell his story in the Introduction. A special thanks also goes to David Murray for answering one of my queries about his work with the World Saxophone Quartet. Jay Lawrence and Justin Cash shared with me their knowledge of jazz in the 1990s. Edward A. Berlin and Thomas Riis kindly answered questions about early popular songs. I learned about New Orleans charivari from a talk Mark McKnight gave at a conference on American music. Francelle Carapetyan secured licensing rights for the illustrations; Tom Laskey, of Sony Music, produced the 3-CD recording set. Denae Coco and Joseph Hoffman helped with research. I would like to acknowledge my particular indebtedness to the late Mark Tucker for all he taught me about jazz and scholarship, without which this book would not have been possible. Finally, I am grateful to my wife, Sally, and my boys, Daniel and Robbie, for their loving support and encouragement during the process of writing.

Good comprehensive textbook
By Parker Knight
This was a good comprehensive textbook. Our teacher was a musician and for him it was hard to teach following the outline but his own experience with famous people and him being black musician gave me allot of pride and joy to realize his past experience to students. The book came into play as aide in his past and gave us a way to connect at least in facts. He had other insightful ideas and recall of his past memories and experience which enriched the book's value even more. Again, very good book and comprehensive textbook that covers everything for a Summer class. A Semester class in Fall or Spring would include a more enriching field trips.

Great overview
By Library
This is an excellent textbook. The writing is enjoyable and clear. The topics are all explained on a basic level for someone who knows little or nothing about Jazz. This textbook is a great place to start for someone wanting to learn what kind of Jazz they like. It taught me how to appreciate the Jazz I didn't see merit in before, and exposed me to Jazz that I didn't even know about.

Amazing text that provides a solid source of information for musicians and historians. As a teacher I still refer to this text when I get to the "Jazz Age" and use a lot of the songs it talks about. Glad I bought it and kept it on my bookshelf.

This makes it a good book for beginners
By Alphanor
First, let us be kind with this book which compiles the experience and market savvy of someone with a long career as an analyst. The author is literate and demonstrates multifaceted market knowledge and deserves credit for it. This makes it a good book for beginners.

The drawback is that almost every topic of interest is just lightly touched upon, to the pint of being largely useless for advanced practitioners. Experienced investors are likely to feel at a loss with such meager content. Readers looking for deeper insights into topics such as valuations, market sentiment, quantitative investing, technical analysis or cycles should turn to more advanced works such as Kirkpatrick / Dahlquist for technical analysis or A Jubilee on Wall Street by David Barker for cycles analysis.

Complete Approach to Investing
By e hassanyeh
Markets have evolved in recent years and become more volatile due to global economic and geo political issues and established market theories are thus being challenged. Whilst there are many investment styles that one can consider for investing in today's financial markets, no single method can be relied upon to give an absolute approach.

Fusion Analysis does just that. By considering different investment styles (fundament, technical, behavioural & quantitative analysis) Fusion offers modern investors an opportunity to cover all bases by blending these into a single investment approach and weighting to suit individual criteria.

Not only do have the book, I have also met the Author and attended his training seminars on Fusion Analysis. I found his course to be most refreshing in its content and explanation and his message to be delivered with passion and belief. His methods are tried and tested and his track record speaks for itself.

By exploring how individual investment approaches can successfully be blended into a personal formula to deliver risk-adjusted excess returns is not a new style of investing, its a complete style of investing. For the modern investor, Fusion fits all.

Highly recommended...

Insulin Resistance: The Metabolic Syndrome X (Contemporary Endocrinology)From Humana Press

Gerald Reaven, the discoverer of Syndrome X, and a panel of world-class investigators thoughtfully summarize our current understanding of how insulin resistance and its compensating hyperinsulinemia play a major role in the pathogenesis and clinical course of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease-the so-called diseases of Western civilization. These distinguished authorities detail, for the first time, the pathophysiological consequences and the clinical syndromes, excluding Type 2 diabetes, related to insulin resistance. They also examine the genetic and lifestyle factors that contribute to the wide differences in insulin action that exist in the population at large. Timely and authoritative, Insulin Resistance: The Metabolic Syndrome X illuminates the full importance of insulin resistance as a major cause of hypertension, heart disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
With the discovery of insulin in 1922, the study of diabetes was changed forever. From that time forward, it has been difficult to discuss the pathophysiology of diabetes without in some way referring to this critical metabolic hormone, which is a life-saving treatment in patients who lack it. The role of insulin in diabetes proved to be far more complex than its absence, however. Research over the past 60 years has gradually revealed that disease caused by resistance to insulin (type 2, or non-insulin-dependent, diabetes) is more prevalent than that due to the absence of insulin (type 1 diabetes). This realization, now universally accepted, caused researchers to emphasize the study of insulin-signaling pathways and to initiate efforts to treat the disease with drugs meant to alleviate the resistant state. The thiazolidinediones are a class of drug that fulfill this need; they represent a therapeutic milestone. But the problem of insulin resistance extends far beyond type 2 diabetes, in ways that were totally unanticipated. Gerald Reaven was among the pioneers in this burgeoning field. He identified insulin resistance as a risk factor for and pathophysiologic trigger of disorders as apparently unconnected as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and polycystic ovary disease. Reaven and Laws have now brought together the diverse elements of this field in a book that will be of broad interest to the medical community.

The book has three parts. The first part contains seven chapters about various aspects of the genetic and environmental factors that affect the action of insulin. The subjects of these chapters include the genetic epidemiology of insulin resistance, the variations in insulin resistance among ethnic groups, and the effects of body-fat distribution, exercise, and smoking. This section is uneven in quality but contains much valuable information that is hard to find in one place.

The second part comprises six chapters concerning insulin resistance. The first chapter reviews the molecular basis of insulin resistance, including evidence of defects at the level of the tyrosine kinase domain of the insulin receptor. Three chapters examine the basis of insulin resistance in the three key target organs for the metabolic action of insulin: liver, skeletal muscle, and fat. It is increasingly recognized that the consequences of insulin resistance, and the mechanisms for insulin resistance, are highly tissue-specific, and these chapters are valuable summaries of what is known about this topic. The chapter on nuclear magnetic resonance as a noninvasive probe of the mechanisms of insulin resistance in humans is the best review of this field that I have encountered.

The real excitement in this field derives from an examination of the important clinical syndromes that are viewed, at least by the authors, as being associated with -- and possibly caused by -- insulin resistance. In the third part of the book, discussions of cardiovascular disorders predominate; the chapters cover the links between insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, hypertension, microalbuminuria, cardiovascular disease, and fibrinolysis. Much work in this area has been heavily based on associations between insulin resistance, as assessed by hyperinsulinemia or insulin-clamp techniques, and various end points, such as blood pressure. The missing ingredient has been precise mechanistic links allowing investigators to distinguish between noncausal associations and direct causal effects. On the basis of the assessments in these chapters, we still have a way to go in this regard. The ability of insulin to induce expression of the prothrombotic molecule plasminogen-activator inhibitor type 1 is an excellent example of how future studies may evolve. The availability of thiazolidinediones that act directly to reduce insulin resistance may prove the most rapid route to defining unambiguously the role of insulin resistance in the pathophysiology of the diverse disorders to which it has been linked. Recent studies make it clear that reducing insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia with thiazolidinediones improves hyperandrogenism in women with polycystic ovary disease, as reviewed in the final chapter.

The study of insulin resistance will continue to evolve as new insights into insulin signaling emerge and as better drugs to treat the disorder become available. This book is an excellent and useful compendium of information about this rapidly moving field. It will be an essential addition to the libraries of those interested in any of the disorders linked to this prevalent metabolic state.

" This is an excellent book that will be particularly informative for those readers who are interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying the development of insulin resistance and the clinical and public health consequences of the metabolic syndrome. "Who better to edit and contribute to a book on insulin resistance than Gerald Reaven, ...As a major contributor to the notion of a 'metabolic syndrome', Reaven has helped develop our ideas in this area for many years, bringing a pattern of thinking to an extremely complex area....the breadth of the book and the universally clear presentation and focus suggest that there should be something for everyone. Laws contributes an excellent chapter on insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and CVD,...remarkably consistent across the chapters, they were well focused, logically presented and comprehensive....The insulin resistance framework forms a pattern that has proven remarkably important in helping develop research strategies and this book helped me understand the many and varied facets of this pattern." -Elsevier Science

IR; The hidden resistance in a diversity of diseases
By Dr Allen E Gale
It was in 1986 at the end of his Banting Memorial lecture that Reaven said: "At first blush it appears outlandish to suggest an association between hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia.." His words have rung in my ears ever since! Yes hyperinsulinemia is now widely understood to be the measurable outcome of insulin resistance, now known by the international acronym "IR". Insulin resistance is the "hidden resistance" that leads to an incredible diversity of clinical disorders which "at first blush" appear even more unlikely; these disorders in fact range from diabetes to polycystic ovary disease; and from hypertension to unwanted facial hair in women to name just four conditions! It is highly appropriate that Reaven has now given the world the benefit of his understanding of this ubiquitous Metabolic Syndrome. This syndrome has baffled science for decades and has lead to an incredidible explosion of research papers on this theme; it is almost impossible to even read and understand all the abstracts for "insulin resistance" on Medline let alone read the published papers! Reaven's book is a welcome addition to our resources.

Ritual Gone Wrong: What We Learn from Ritual Disruption (Oxford Ritual Studies Series), by Kathryn T. McClymond

The discipline of religious studies has historically tended to focus on discrete ritual mistakes occurring in the context of individual performances as outlined in ethnographic or sociological studies; scholars have largely overlooked the extensive discussions of ritual mistakes that exist in the religious literature of indigenous traditions. And yet ritual mistakes (ranging from the simple to the complex) happen all the time, and they continue to carry ritual "weight," even when no one seriously doubts their impact on the efficacy of a ritual.

In Ritual Gone Wrong, Kathryn McClymond approaches ritual mistakes as an integral part of ritual life and argues that religious traditions can accommodate mistakes and are often prepared for them. McClymond shows that many traditions even incorporate the regular occurrence of errors into their ritual systems, developing a substantial literature on how rituals can be disrupted, how these disruptions can be addressed, and when disruptions have gone too far. Offering a series of case studies ranging from ancient India to modern day Iraq, and from medieval allegations of child sacrifice to contemporary Olympic ceremonies, McClymond explores the numerous ways in which ritual can go wrong, and demonstrates that the ritual is by nature fluid, supple, and dynamic-simultaneously adapting to socio-cultural conditions and, in some cases, shaping them.

Review

"Ranging widely over the history of religion and politics-from ancient India to contemporary Iraq-this book illuminates dimensions of ritual practice that have heretofore received insufficient attention. By exploring what happens when rituals, whether formally 'religious' or not, are disrupted or come into conflict, Kathryn McClymond sheds valuable light on the inevitable political dimension in ritual action." --Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies, Harvard University

About the Author
Dan Harris was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1948.  He earned degrees in Chemistry from MIT in 1968 and Caltech 1973 and was a postdoc at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.  After teaching at the University of California at Davis from 1975-1980 and at Franklin and Marshall College from 1980-1983, he moved to the Naval Air Systems Command at China Lake, California, where he is now a Senior Scientist and Esteemed Fellow.  While teaching analytical chemistry at Davis, he wrote his lectures in bound form for his students.  This volume caught the attention of publishers' representatives wandering through the college bookstore.  The first edition of Quantitative Chemical Analysis was published in 1982.  The first edition of Exploring Chemical Analysis came out in 1996.  Both have undergone regular revision.  Dan is also co-author of Symmetry and Spectroscopy published in 1978 by Oxford University Press and now available from Dover Press.  His book Materials for Infrared Windows and Domes was published by SPIE press in 1999.  Dan and his wife Sally were married in 1970.  They have two children and four grandchildren.  Sally's work on every edition of the books is essential to their quality and accuracy.

most student friendly of all the analytical chemistry textbooks
By A.Reader1
So, you're considering either buying or adopting this text for general analytical chemistry? Good choice!

This is the easiest, most straightforward book on the market for students. It's been that way through many editions. It was a breath of fresh air (in comparison to Skoog's 'Fundamentals...' book) when it was first published in 1982. Harris is good writer - he does a nice job of engaging students in the material without being overly technical or theoretical.

Your other textbook choices are "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry" by Skoog et al. and "Analytical Chemistry" by Gary D. Christian.

Skoog and Christian are both good but they just can't match Harris for clarity. Fortunately, whichever you choose, none can be considered deficient.

A similar book to Harris is "Modern Analytical Chemistry" by David Harvey (ISBN-13: 978-0072375473; ISBN-10: 0072375477). It's out of print now but you can download the 2nd edition for free at the author's website at DePauw University.

One thing I don't like about these books: Why do they include all this material on instrumental analysis? The advanced/Instrumental texts do a much better job with these topics anyway. The extra chapters make the introductory textbooks needlessly heavy.

The first course analytical books should just stick to the basics like acid/base/complexometric/redox titrations, gravimetric analysis, sample preparation, extractions, etc.

Daniel Harris, along with Bertolucci, has also written a true classic in the field of molecular spectroscopy: "Symmetry and Spectroscopy: An Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy". Get that too for your advanced phys chem courses.

It did not talk about useless things, but got straight to the point

I used this textbook for my class and it was so simple to read and understand. It did not talk about useless things, but got straight to the point. It gave great examples and questions to help with what they're explaining.
