Although Meyer adds some nice touches--the narrator is herself a vampire, for example--critics had few positive things to say about Bree's life story. "Intelligent and gifted, Bella, Jacob and Edward are intrinsically glamorous to readers," Salon notes. "But Bree is PVT (poor vampire trash) and she knows it." While Bree could have been interesting, she's less than the "wild, amoral, bloodthirsty teen protagonist" (Guardian) critics hoped to see; clunky prose and dialogue don't help. Still, the Washington Post speaks for many readers: "The satisfaction of Twilight novels cannot be measured by such terms as ‘good' and ‘bad.' ... Wonderful Short Story by the Talented Ms Meyer

In my opinion, this was the best entry in the Twilight series. Set in the weeks before the big fight in Eclipse, it tells the story of newborn vampire Bree Tanner, a former runaway with no place to go. As a vampire she is disgusted by some of the behavior of her peers and does her best to quietly blend in and avoid trouble. For a while she does well at this, thanks to the repelling powers of Freaky Fred, another vampire, dubbed so by his vampire peers who are repulsed by him. However, while out hunting she eventually attracts the attention of Diego, another newborn vampire who has retained some of his human qualities. He likes Bree and the two of them spend a blissful day learning about each other and about their new existence as vampires. Together they learn that sunlight is not dangerous to vampires as they had believed and decide to share this information with their coven leader, Riley. Unfortunately, as they soon find out, this knowledge is dangerous.

Their romance is quick and fleeting and ultimately doomed but it is charming and cute while it lasts. Bree is a fascinating character with layer after layer, like an onion that is slowly peeled back. Diego is also interesting but before we can learn much about him he is gone. And then there is Fred, whose powers of repulsive magnetism served as a shield for both himself and Bree. Unfortunately for Bree, Fred decides to go off on his own, rebelling against Riley who wants to lead them into a fight against the Cullen coven. Fred doesn't trust Riley and asks Bree to accompany him. Sadly, she has been led astray by Riley who has promised to lead her to Diego, an offer she can't refuse. Fred invites both her and Diego to meet up with him the following day and Bree agrees, not realizing that her time on Earth is sadly coming to an end...

This book was wonderful. I am not a huge fan of the Twilight series, having read the series only because a friend of mine begged me to. However, with it's rich story and complex characters, not to mention a great plot, this book is irresistible. Bree Tanner is probably my favorite character in the entire series. Stephenie Meyer claims this was a writing exercise in her folder. I can only hope she decides to write more exercises and share them with the world.

If you're a true Twilight fan, you'll love this!

I loved this book! I loved getting to see the story of Bree and what it meant to be one of the "bad" vampires, or vampires that didn't act like the Cullen's. I loved the little love story Meyer fit in there (don't want to spoil anything). It was just enough to keep me wanting more. But, unfortunately, you won't get more, and you'll see why if you read. It definitely pulls at the heart strings, and makes you wish Bree didn't have to die, even though we all knew what was coming at the end. It would have been so interesting to see what would have happened if Bree didn't die and the Cullen's took her in. I loved getting to learn more about what was going on during the same time that everyone with Bella and Edward was taking place, but from the story of Bree and Victoria and the new army she was creating to destroy Bella. It was a great and quick read. I wish Meyer would make more short spin offs for the book. If you're a true Twilight fan, you will most likely love this book!

Beautifully Crafted Story for All

Breathtakingly tragic, any reader of the Twilight books will be expecting a punch at some point ... but the punch in the gut received is more than can be anticipated. Bree Tanner is the girl we can all identify with; charming and witty in spite of her fears, Bree represents a type of innocence and hope that isn't seen in any of the Twilight books. She is trapped between knowledge and ignorance, caught by her young age in a spider web of deceit and betrayal, a potentially useful tool. Her true value isn't seen even by Bree, and seeing the moment that value is recognized during a well-known scene with the Cullens is a fascinating twist of perspective. A fairly quick read for most, this book is truly a page-turner with a perfectly crafted plot and storyline to compliment and contrast with the Twilight books readers have already fallen in love with. Addictive, with a soft sigh that isn't displeasure but something more akin to, "Well, that's ... exactly as it was always meant to be," at the end. Definitely recommended for the Twilight fans as well as those who weren't big on the series - this is Bree Tanner's story, and it is unlike anything you imagine it is.

About the Author
Sekkei Harada is the abbot of Hosshinji, a Soto Zen training monastery and temple, in Fukui Prefecture, near the coast of central Japan. He was born in 1926 in Okazaki, near Nagoya, and was ordained at Hosshinji in 1951. In 1953, he went to Hamamatsu to practice under Zen Master Gien Inoue, and received inkashomei (certification of realization) in 1957. In 1974, he was installed as resident priest and abbot of Hosshinji and was formally recognized by the Soto Zen sect as a certified Zen master (shike) in 1976. Since 1982, Harada has traveled abroad frequently, teaching in such countries as Germany, France, the United States, and India. He also leads zazen groups within Japan, in Tokyo and Saitama. From 2003-2005, he was Director of the Soto Zen Buddhism Europe Office located in Milan.

Daigaku Rumme was born in 1950 in Mason, City Iowa, USA. In 1976, he entered Hosshinji as a layman and was ordained by Harada Roshi in 1978. He lived and practiced at Hosshinji until 2003. On several occasions he accompanied Harada on his visits to Europe, India, and the United States, as his interpreter. Since 2003, Rumme has been on the staff of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center located in San Francisco.

A must have reference for any system or software architect.

This book is a repository of architectural techniques and knowledge that is intended to be customized per project. It is geared towards system architecture, of which software architect is one small discipline, which is true in the context of this book and the systems it refers too. The systems they are referencing are airplane systems, fighter jets, and other large systems.

I do believe the book is a great start in building a repository of architectural techniques and knowledge. One thing the repository must accomplish before it is really usable is being distributed electronically. The author says that is in the works.

The book is a goldmine of information and guidance. They include a ton of content geared towards the decision making process. It is in the format of Pitfalls, Negative consequences, and Mitigations.

Amazon has made the content searchable. You can check out the table of contents, and spend some time searching on topics, for example "architecture tools", "evaluations", or "performance". Also, if you search the web for MFESA or "Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures" you will find some presentation and papers done by the author, which will give you a good look at some of the material found in the book.

The authors state that this is a work in progress and this is only the beginning. Hopefully in coming content we will see some guidance on tactics as they are related to quality attributes. I have not seen a more complete compilation of quality attributes anywhere, but they stop at the quality attributes. They do for what I would consider a good reason, it would have double or tripled the size of the book if they would have picked a domain and covered tactics. They do cover architectural mechanisms, styles, and patterns.

They also cover decision-making techniques in detail, and a tactic is a design decision that enables control over a quality attribute. They dedicate an entire appendix to decision-making techniques.

Although the book is geared towards system architecture, it also applies 100% to software architecture. I have not found any information in the book that is not relevant to software architecture.

This is a must have reference for any system or software architect. Keep in mind it is not a process, it is a repository that is used to create an instance of a process. Every project is different to a certain degree, and because of that, every project needs its own instance of a process.

MFESA - A Framework Description for Systems Architects

This book is a bound edition of CMU/SEI's MFESA framework description document, a description of which can be found at their web site. Note that MFESA is a framework, not a methodology, practice, task, or tool. If you are unfamiliar with frameworks, you can think of this as if it were an organizational process description, compliant to the CMMI, etc.

The authors assert that systems architecting is done very poorly in most organizations, with little to no recognition of the roles, processes, resources, planning, reviews or planning documents that are needed at the engineering level. I would agree. The Method Framework (MFESA) provides a conceptual model that is "informative" not "normative" of the systems architecting process. This framework also applies to software architecting projects.

In particular, the book doesn't advertise or rehash someone else's methodology or framework (i.e., SySML, UML, TOGAF, DoDAF, MoDAF, FEAF, etc.). It does answer the Zachman Framework interrogatives "what", "why", "when", and "who" (but not "how") from an organizational perspective. That is why this book is so useful.

Why would you need such a resource? CMMI doesn't tell you how to architect systems, neither does ISO 15288, any MIL standard, or tool vendor literature.

This is not a book about "Operational View", rather it is a book about "System View", and in particular the "Project View" (DoDAF 2.0 terminology here) or the "Acquisition View" (MoDAF terminology). It helps to bootstrap your planning and execution of new product/system design, and it helps to keep you out of the ditch.

This framework is work-product and process driven. The process steps are laid out in a conceptual timeline of events with standard Hartley-Pirbhai process block description of each task step (inputs, outputs, entry criteria, exit criteria, process description, off-nominal conditions, gotcha's, etc.).

This is a good first effort from the authors, and I will be using this text for my own systems architecting classes since it starts at the engineering level and drives down into the day-to-day activities that systems architects must perform to create viable systems.

Secrets of Heaven

I find this book to be so very inspiring. I is not something you pick up and read in one sitting. Each page contains a quote that make you stop and contemplate on. It makes no difference which page you start, you can start in the middle & work your way back or forward. Just open it up & any page you read, it is something that speaks to you. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It speaks to all people of all nations, race, creed or color. You will not be sorry you picked it up. It is something you can read any time and many times again & again:*)

no longer secret, yet mysterious

300 glimpses that sear the eyes that see, 300 whispers that ring the ears that hear. Each one coming from a vantage point far beyond our ken, yet familiar in its thudding, sheer pertinence. All together they combine to portray a substantial witness to a reality greater than our mundane existence, a composite, point-by-point description that in sum says: there is more to life than you know, and this is something you have always sensed yet never knew to articulate.

It is marvelous for the bedside, just a minute's worth of reading before lights out, a terrific solace for insomnia; meditating on these passages is a great practice when sleep won't come--much relief from tension by simply experiencing the truth and the presence of the voice from heaven.

The problem with this book is that it is possible to be riveted by each and every poignant passage, even to be stopped in the reading by the need to just take it in, and then to drift, to forget, to return to mundane activities with only the slightest shift in perspective, with only a feeling that there is something out there that must be known, a "what is it?" dimly felt.

Tears will well up inside me...

A new book has just been published called SECRETS OF HEAVEN: mystery teachings of the angels. The book includes passages from some of the earliest messages that have come through Marshall Vian Summers over 30 years ago. 320 pages of excerpts, some one-liners, and some brief paragraphs. At times I will open the book and read a passage and sometimes tears will well up inside me and other times I have to stop everything I am doing and simply sit still and ruminate on their deep meaning.

The consensus trance of our mental environment needs to be challenged and changed. These angelic teachings come very close to penetrating as well as healing our separation consciousness. It seems that we are in such a crisis that a yearning for something new amidst the plethora of ordinary messages may be heard, may be felt, may just stop us in our tracks and see and feel who we have become and shock us (or draw us gently) to awaken. If you are in a position to go deeper into what it means to be human at this particular time in history, I urge you to buy this book and periodically open it, read a few pages and deeply feel their new messages.
