Annie Mills (London, UK) has worked in the compliance industry for nearly 10 years, working in many areas of investment management and banking compliance. Currently she is Senior Compliance Officer, Global Banking and Advisory at Standard Bank, where she has held previous positions as Head of International Compliance Monitoring, and as Compliance Officer. During her time at Standard Bank, her compliance team won the 2005 Compliance Register Award for Best UK Compliance Department. Previous to Standard Bank, Mills worked for Grindlays Private Bank, Guardian Investment Holdings, and First Marathon Securities. I used this book for a paper about body cameras. It was nice to have Scalise's perspective as he is a practitioner instead of just a researcher (no offense to those that are). He new of real complications with body cameras which were similar to ones that I had seen prior to reading it. It was good stuff and should certainly be read by law enforcement upper echelon who are seeking to write body camera policy.

Starts off at a simple level, but too abruptly increases in its demands

LANGUAGE HISTORY, LANGUAGE CHANGE, AND LANGUAGE RELATIONSHIP is an introductory textbook to historical/comparative linguistics by Hans Heinrich Hock and Brian D. Joseph. It began as a simplification of Hock's widely respected handbook Principles of Historical Linguistics (De Gruyter, 2nd ed. 1991). Around 85% percent of the content is Hock's distillation of previously written material, while the remaining 15% was contributed by Josephs to, in the publisher's words, "give a fully American perspective". Joseph's contributions are most readily visible in the treatment of the Balkan Sprachbund, one of his research interests.

For about the first 130 pages, this textbook is a fairly admirable introduction to historical linguistics for neophytes, containing remarks on the general phenomenon of language change (i.e. the difference between the Lord's Prayer in Old English and in Modern English), a basic introduction to phonetics and phonology, and an explanation of the divergence of the Indo-European languages. There's even a chapter on writing systems here, which the other introductory textbooks I'm familiar with tend to overlook. Hock's examples are generally drawn from the Indo-European languages, and he seems to assume that the reader will be focusing on this language family. The book may now seem a little dated in its treatment of the glottalic hypothesis as a raging controversy, as that seems to have died down, but the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European generally follows contemporary mainstream lines.

However, the textbook then makes a great jump in what it expects from the reader, going from an appropriately simple tone to one very little different from PRINCIPLES OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS. Mouton de Gruyter's typesetting doesn't help, as it follows a style appropriate for a handbook but rather intimidating for a textbook. For those looking to read up on basic historical linguistics, I'd much rather recommend Lyle Campbell's Historical Linguistics, 2nd Edition: An Introduction (MIT Press, 2nd ed. 2004), which is written at a very genial tone throughout. And after that, one should be well-equipped to go straight on to PRINCIPLES OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, skipping this odd mishmash.

Not really a textbook, but definitely introductory

I was left somewhat confused by what I saw in the two star review for this volume. Granted, we both agree that its an excellent book, but I was surprise by his title stating that the book, "Starts off at a simple level, but too abruptly increases in its demands."

Not really. Perhaps the kind of information becomes more complex, but I'd say that has more to do with the fact that morphological change and syntactic change in historical linguistics are far more complex topics than the first few chapters. And then when you move into meaning and semantics you jump again. But that's an issue with the field, not with this book. Throughout the volume, Hock and Joseph's writing is clear, helpful and extremely accessible. The book is a surprisingly easy read and an absolute pleasure. I read roughly 100 pages of it over the course of two days just because it was so engrossing. If you have a couple of years of linguistics (or even a couple years of classics studies) under your belt, you won't have a problem with this volume.

It's an incredibly handy book that covers an immense amount of material in a very accessible manner. The reason, I'd say its not really a textbook is that it lacks any sort of exercises where a student to practice or develop skills for doing historical linguistics. The book functions better in providing information about the state of historical linguistics and the kinds of research that is done in the field.

Like the other review, I would probably give the book four stars. However, I have given it five here in order to balance it out with the unfortunate two start review, which this volume definitely does not deserve.

As funny as watching a baby repeatedly punch himself in the face

Termeer has done something for us akin to taking a hatchet to the magical Narnian wardrobe. He has blown open a passageway into the impossible mind of an ADHD, socially-abstruse, well-travelled, world-worn, circumcised Gentile. Reading his haphazard collection of thoughts and stories feels like peering into a world where Vonnegut and Douglas Coupland collaborated with the screenwriters of Arrested Development; disjointed narrative, random madness, political satire, and overall hilarity ensue.

The reader must be willing to overlook some misspelled words, poor punctuation and the occasional lack of coherency, but if he can stomach the errors he will find himself immersed in an experience as riveting and painfully funny as listening to your half-drunk uncle shamelessly tell you about the time he lopped off a testicle with a pair of pruning shears.

Laugh out loud funny ! You can't make this stuff up!

This book is laugh out loud funny and truly entertaining. Every single story that was shared by Termeer felt familiar and like I had heard each story a couple times before ...but this time didn't have to hear Josh's crackily,dry, monetone voice that's sounds like nails on a chalkboard at times, which made the story telling much more enjoyable!

More commas per dollar than any other publication in history

There really isn't any GOOD reason to read Sublime Absurdity. But the best reason is for sheer punctuation density. You can't get this many commas in anything less than a 500+ page novel. And what's that going to run you? 10, 12, 15 dollars? Just 99 cents bought me enough commas to last me 5 or 6 years!

Grade 7 Up- The name Frankenstein conjures a host of screen and cartoon images. This radio theatre presentation of Mary Shelley's horror story done by the St. Charles Players uses language compatible with the original text. The script is coupled with appropriate sound effects including some bloodcurdling screams. The combination should encourage student listeners to learn about Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation. There are contemporary issues in this classic novel's themes such as the moral implications of scientific discovery and how one person's zeal for success can affect others. Although the emotional portrayal of multiple deaths is sometimes melodramatic and the wooden speech of the monster is appropriately pathetic, overall the company moves briskly and skillfully through the story. This recording is best suited for use as a classroom aid in introducing or reviewing the book. Also, it might prove valuable to students preparing a radio theatre adaptation. The thin cardboard jacket is not sturdy enough for frequent circulation and cover art is minimal. Cassettes are clearly marked, and each side is announced. This presentation of Frankenstein is a useful but not essential purchase for school libraries.

Gr. 8^-12. Part of the Whole Story series, this is the full text of Mary Shelley's classic gothic story, which was first published in 1818 and has been a wild success ever since. Philippe Munch's illustrations have none of the power of Barry Moser's unforgettable woodcuts that evoke the loneliness of the grotesque outsider (in the Pennyroyal edition published by the University of California Press in 1984). The design here is crowded, and the type is small. However, the many period prints and maps in color and in black and white, with long, detailed captions, do provide the historical setting for the story, its geography, customs, and ideas. Teens enthralled by pop versions of the myth as well as science fiction fans will be interested in going back to the full version of what has been called the first science fiction novel and learning about the circumstances under which it was written by a woman, just 18 years old, 170 years ago. This is NOT the 1818 edition!!!

This book claims to be the 1818 original text, but it is NOT. THIS IS THE 1831 EDITION! I specifically needed the 1818 edition for my literature class, and the 1831 edition is substantially different. The overall theme/tone is different (the original emphasizes free will, while the later edition emphasizes the role of fate). There are many other small changes- in the 1831 edition Ernest becomes a soldier, while in the original he is a farmer; in the 1831 edition Elizabeth is an orphan adopted by Victor's family, while in the original she is his blood cousin; in the 1831 edition (unlike the original), Henry Clerval has to defy his father in order to go to college. I became suspicious that I had the wrong edition during class, and then looked up these differences and confirmed that THIS BOOK IS THE 1831 EDITION! If you need a particular edition for a class, be warned that this book is falsely advertised.

Kindle edition is the 1831 edition, not 1818

I got the free Kindle edition from the link on the page for the Norton Critical Edition of the 1818 text. Mary Shelley made many significant edits to the book for the 1831 edition. I assumed it was the same edition because the link was from the same page. I didn't realize it was different until I went to write my assigned essay and went online to search for page numbers for the passages I wanted to quote. Many of the quotes I wanted to use don't even appear in the original version. This is a very important distinction, and I wish it had been labeled correctly so I would not have had to waste so much time looking for online versions of the correct text in order to replace the quotes I could not use from the later version. This edition is fine if you just want to read the book, but if you're reading it for school, you have more than likely been assigned the 1818 version, which is very different. The Kindle edition is also lacking in any kind of Kindle formatting, making it a hassle to find locations in the book.

Great classic horror.

I have always wanted to read this book trying to get the horror classics, already read The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and decided to read this one next. The only downfall that I have to say and this does not go against the author at all, but it was a little hard to read with the way it was written. Took me a few chapters to get used to the way it was written, after that I took off with reading it. On saying that this story is so good. Wish I would have read it a while ago. If you are used to the old classic film version this is nothing like that. This is so good what I loved is you get to hear the version of Frankenstein, and then you get the Monster's version. So well written became instantly a new favorite of mine. There are a lot of scenes where it is just so sad and you feel sorry for both of them. It contains the horror and mostly full of sadness. Highly recommend this book. If you have ever thought of reading it......DO IT. I also love the way this book is made to from the cover to the gold on the pages. Just loved this book all the way around.
