Just as the author describes a market in Delhi, this novel "begins everywhere at once." Readers are immediately thrown into urban India, piecing together the important players of this drama. Mahajan begins the novel by describing a singular, almost routine event of 1996: a car bomb in a crowded Delhi marketplace. In the years that follow, the lives of a survivor, the family of two deceased boys, and the bombers themselves become intertwined. For the most part, the story takes place in India, and readers could easily become bogged down with unfamiliar terminology in the first third of the book. However, the narrative begins to pick up speed when Mansoor, the bomb survivor and a Muslim, leaves India to pursue his education in the United States. He returns to his homeland because of medical concerns complicated by his injuries from the bombing. Teens will be interested in the change Mansoor undergoes after his return to Dehli and intrigued by the human side of both the bombers and those affected by this act of violence. About the Author
Karan Mahajan was born in 1984 and grew up in New Delhi, India. His first novel, Family Planning, was a finalist for the Dylan Thomas Prize and published in nine countries. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR’s All Things Considered, The New Yorker online, The Believer, The Paris Review Daily, and Bookforum. A graduate of Stanford University and the Michener Center for Writers, he lives in Austin, Texas.

Powerful book.

I picked up the book because it received a rave review on the NYTimes Book Review, and it didn't disappoint. Without giving away too much of the book, a terrorist sets off a bomb in a crowded market, and the rest of the book follows both the terrorist as well as the victims of the blast over the course of their lives. It's a heavy subject, so I wondered how much I'd enjoy reading it on the bus after a long day's work, but the writing is so beautifully written and the characters are so interesting that I found myself getting sucked in and caring deeply about the fallout of such a tragedy. The writer does a phenomenal job of describing the minute details of the terrorist act as well as providing a sense of place and scope of India. While I didn't know much about the racial politics of India that causes such terrorist actions, the book opened up my eyes to something that's probably true of terrorism in real life; that often times the political cause is secondary to the more personal reasons that result in such atrocities. I recently noticed that it's been nominated for the National Book Award, and it didn't surprise me at all. It feels like an important book that is particularly relevant in the post 9/11 world we live in now.

One of the very best books I've read in years

the association of small bombs is a moving and absorbing story. It follows several characters whose lives are touched by a terrorist bomb blast in a small Delhi market. Reading Karan Mahajan's masterful, unsentimental and deeply artful novel, I felt that for the first time in my life I understood what goes on in the mind of a person who might plant such a bomb. I was riveted, fascinated, completely engrossed in the lives of Mansoor, Ayub, Vikas, Deepa, Shockie, Malik -- in Mahajan's unsparing yet humane gaze they began to live fully and richly in my mind, in the way the characters of the best books do. In fact, this was one of the very best books I've read in years. I cannot recommend it enough.

Mahajan expertly renders the intricate repercussions of a terrorist attack in a crowded Delhi market with astonishing emotional range and insight, dazzling prose and a brutal wit that is incisive and compassionate. It's impossible to put down - the devastating story of a family broken apart and an unsettling window into the mind of a violent radical. Beautiful written and politically more relevant than ever. Read it.
