Congratulations from their record producer

I was one of the several record producers to be blessed with an opportunity to work with certain members of the Stoneman family and fortunate to have written and produced what is currently being hailed as possibly their finest album ever recorded. Originally recorded in 1978, I have just now released it for commercial sales to the public. It is titled: The Stonemans-Country Hospitality, and is currently enjoying good sales over Amazon.com's music site. It is a rare recording from an exceptional and legendary musical family. When I first received this book of their life story I sat down and read it without stopping. I discovered at once how little I knew of this family I had worked so closely with. It is a gripping story of the struggles they endured and obstacles they overcame in order to pursue their love for music and survive as a family in the process. Dr. Ivan Tribe has done an outstanding job chronicling their life history and has performed a service for us lovers of bluegrass and traditional mountain music which will place us forever in his debt. I am proud to have my album listed in the discography of this wonderful book.

Leo has TONS of enthusiasm and genuine interest in people, and that's great. If only he had combined that with more study and methodical research, which would have generated more utility from all that passion. If you've read others of Leo's books, they begin feeling somewhat repetitive, and you keep hoping for more great insights, but...in the end, you settle for a nice person without clear instructions for how this can be replicated.

The book made me love it.

I first read this book in the late 70's. I was among a bunch of men who sorely needed to know how to love. But first, know what is love. And Isn't. SO many of us were in love with our penises and the manly power we felt while soaring in orgasm having conquered the female. We left behind us trails of broken hearts, destroyed dreams, corrupted appetites, shattered lives. If any of my contemporaries survived those years then they must have learned something about real love. Leo Buscaglia was called "the love doctor." This book of his is a treasured archive of collected experiences and well-thought-out easily readable chapters about love. His students at college shared and grew. One can't read it without changing. If not a lot, then a little. You just warm up, and grow. I recommend this book as required reading in all colleges, with the primary audiences being the mathematicians, engineers, computer geeks, etc. And any anyone suffering from loneliness or loss.

After a hectic day, I wanted to read something light. I went through my personal library to find a book that could be read within a single sitting. I could not find one. As usual I searched for a book. While I was searching for a book, I happened to see this book and went through some pages. Wow...! It was interesting and I immediately ordered a copy and got it within two weeks. I began reading the book. Believe me. How good it is is really indescribable. I really loved it. I went on reading. The book is worth your hard earned money.

Love is a subject of interest to many. If you are a passionate lover, this is the book for you. Grab a copy of it. Read it. Once you complete reading, you can gift it to someone near and dear to you. I know the ideas in the book will be interesting to many.

Buscaglia is a passionate teacher who taught his students the art of love while at university. He died several years back but his ideas live on. According to him, love is an art but not a science to analyze and calculate in terms of logic and propositions. It is in us, it is in you, it is in human beings. It is the energy that drives us. Buscaglia's ideas are worth remembering, practicing and sharing. This is a book that may change how you feel for your partner or the near and dear one. You should read and enjoy this book. This is a book that everyone should read. It has to be a must read for caring lovers like you.

I truly changed certain ideas I had in relation to love. It is I must love love so that I will be loved. Love is to be exchanged. Love is limitless and unconditional. In the shade of a banyan tree, a grizzled ferryman sits listening to the river. Some say he's a sage. He was once a wandering shramana and, briefly, like thousands of others, he followed Gotama the Buddha, enraptured by his sermons. But this man, Siddhartha, was not a follower of any but his own soul. Born the son of a Brahmin, Siddhartha was blessed in appearance, intelligence, and charisma. In order to find meaning in life, he discarded his promising future for the life of a wandering ascetic. Still, true happiness evaded him. Then a life of pleasure and titillation merely eroded away his spiritual gains until he was just like all the other "child people," dragged around by his desires. Like Hermann Hesse's other creations of struggling young men, Siddhartha has a good dose of European angst and stubborn individualism. His final epiphany challenges both the Buddhist and the Hindu ideals of enlightenment. Siddhartha's life takes him on a journey toward enlightenment. Afire with youthful idealism, the Brahmin joins a group of ascetics, fasting and living without possessions. Meeting Gotama the Buddha, he comes to feel this is not the right path, though he also declines joining the Buddha's followers. He reenters the world, hoping to learn of his own nature, but instead slips gradually into hedonism and materialism. Surfeited and disgusted, he flees from his possessions to become a ferryman's apprentice, learning what lessons he can from the river itself. Herman Hesse's 1922 Bildungsroman parallels the life of Buddha and seems to argue that lessons of this sort cannot be taught but come from one's own struggle to find truth. Noted actor Derek Jacobi interprets this material wonderfully, and the package, despite abridging a Nobel prize winner's prose, can be highly recommended.AJohn Hiett, Iowa City P.L.

Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

Great book but don't buy this edition!

Siddhartha is a great book. This edition, however, is perhaps the worst edition of any book that I have ever--ever--seen published. The number of typos, grammatical mistakes, syntax errors, and other errors is astounding. The publishing house, Simon & Brown, should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse changed my life and it will change yours too.

This book is a classic. In high school, I was told of this book by Andrew McMahon, of whom I was big fan of from his days in the band Something Corporate. He has a tattoo on his arm that says 'The River is Everywhere.' When describing the tattoo, he says it's a quote from Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. After reading the book, I realized that that phrase itself isn't in the book but the meaning is. To this day, that quote still strikes me deeply.

It wasn't an immediate change after I read Siddhartha but in the few years that followed, I slowly began to pick up shamatha meditation. Through the process of learning how to meditate, I picked up the Dhammapada. Through the different translations, I discovered Jack Kerouac and his version of Siddhartha, titled 'Wake up!'. Through the Jack Kerouac and the beat generation, I discovered eastern philosophy, a heart for travel, an interest in yoga, vegetarianism and ultimately veganism, The Road, and all sorts of different kinds of music. Through the changes of interest, I discovered a monastery of Theravada Buddhists within 15 miles of home that a dear friend built by hand with another monk. Eventually, I even met the Dalai Lama and many of the Tibetan monks that followed him. To this day, I meditate daily. I've found new friends, made new connections, and have a newfound respect for all people and the Earth itself. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse planted the seed. This book changed my life and it will change yours too

Grownups who have forgotten Mary Poppins's true charms will be tickled pink to rediscover this uniquely unsentimental fantasy. From a tea party on the ceiling to riding on peppermint horses, rather unusual and surprising adventures await Jane and Michael whenever Mary Poppins pops in. This 80th anniversary edition includes the four original books, Mary Poppins (originally published 1934), Mary Poppins Comes Back (originally published 1935), Mary Poppins Opens the Door (original published 1943), and Mary Poppins in the Park (originally published 1952) grouped into one convenient volume. Beyond the handsome package—a rich brick red cover accented with black and gold spot-gloss decoration—the deeper gems of this edition are the extras. There's a foreword by Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked (HarperCollins, 1995) and Egg & Spoon (Candlewick, 2014), that relates the story of his nerve-wracking, but ultimately illuminating, meeting with the great P.L. Travers when she was in her nineties. Maguire accurately captures the difference between the silver screen versions and the original tales: "The books…show glimmers of a far more mysterious and even dangerous world. For thirty years before the nanny began to sing on the screen, she stalked the pages of these books with ferocity, vanity, and power." At the end there's a brief excerpt from a talk Travers gave at the Unversity of Connecticut in 1974 entitled "On Not Writing for Children." Librarians and students of children's literature would do well to think on Traver's reluctance to call herself a "children's book author," for, as she states, "every book is a message, and if children happen to receive and like it, they will appropriate it to themselves no matter what the author may say nor what label he gives himself." A must-have for diehard fans and, though a tad bulky for little hands, nevertheless an excellent addition to home, library, and school collections.

a classic - almost

Reading the books that I loved as a child was wonderful - until I realized that it had been edited to make it more socially acceptable. The chapter called "Bad Tuesday" involves a magical compass that transports the characters all over the world. The original work used the author's vision of what the people would be like, and had used some pretty offensive stereotypes of the time. But the altered version completely changed the story, not only using animals instead of people, but changing even the storyline. Would have liked to be able to see the original work also, or at least been warned that the newer version was altered to that extent.

Mary Poppins Pops In For Parties in the Park

When adults forget their childhood pals, daydreamers make foolish wishes and the wind blows unusually strong, it always leads to something quite out of the ordinary -- that is, whenever Mary Poppins is around.
In this, the final Mary Poppins book that P.L. Travers gave us before her death at age 90, we share the five Banks' childrens' adventures. Besides Jane and Michael, who were in the classic Disney movie, there are also toddler twins John and Barbara and infant Annabel.
A big departure from the Disney flick is Mary Poppins herself. Here, she is not the smiling, syrupy sweet nanny that young Julie Andrews portrayed; rather, the book's title character is strict, stern, often sarcastic and very taken with herself. Her strong personality makes her a unique storybook character and readers will find this Mary Poppins more of an enigma. Which, frankly, makes for better stories.
Everything in this book is G-rated but not preachy. Travers gives her young readers many fascinating, but never frightening, fantasy situations. Or are they real? Jane and Michael can never quite tell. The lines between what's real and what's not always blur around Mary Poppins.
This book is a series of unrelated chapters, self-contained stories, all dealing with the same main characters. Nothing is ever as it seems in the nursery of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane -- or in the nearby park.
On a hot summer's day, Mary Poppins tells the children a tale of a hobo who was an angel in disguise, shedding his rags and growing wings as he flies away.
In another chapter, Michael, upset that he's caught a cold, finds that some days when everything seems to be going all right, it's actually going all wrong. He's taught a valuable lesson on a planet full of cats.
Later in the book, the children find messages on falling leaves. And witness a delightful, but not frightening, Halloween shadow dance in the park.
The nanny's magical cousin, Mr. Mo, is introduced. Jane finds the little toy figures she's created and destroyed do have lives of their own.
Around Mary Poppins, adults -- including favorites such as Admiral Boom, Miss Lark and her two dogs Andrew and Willoughby, the Bird Woman and Bert -- are caught off balance. Zookeepers, policemen and taxi drivers react to a flurry of frenzied events. Characters pop out of storybooks, out of Jane's mind, and off ceramic bookends. Lions and unicorns and even Indian chiefs prance through the park.
We are taken to worlds that exist between the blades of grass in the lawn, and up in the sky, to where felines and children disappear. There are traffic snarls, wedding breakfasts and birthday parties. And through it all, stalks Mary Poppins, with not a hair out of place. In very short order, characters get what they deserve, if not what they expect, and things are set right.
How does she do it? No one knows. Mary Poppins, you see, never, ever explains. But, she always entertains. Have some fun in the park with this magical nanny.

The entire Mary Poppins book series by the wonderful P.L. Travers is fantastic. I'm so glad to see they have finally arrived in hardcover with the original covers. No, this is not the sugary Disney movie--but this, the original story, will take your breath away with its magic and wonder. Give it a try. I think if you take these stories for what they are you will appreciate the wit and the adventure.

About the Author
R. David Gustafson is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Rock Valley College in Illinois and has also taught extensively at Rockford College and Beloit College. He is coauthor of several best-selling mathematics textbooks, including Gustafson/Frisk/Hughes' COLLEGE ALGEBRA, Gustafson/Karr/Massey's BEGINNING ALGEBRA, INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH, and the Tussy/Gustafson and Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig developmental mathematics series. His numerous professional honors include Rock Valley Teacher of the Year and Rockford's Outstanding Educator of the Year. He has been very active in AMATYC as a Midwest Vice-president and has been President of IMACC, AMATYC's Illinois affiliate. Ich gebe hier 5 Sterne, weil es das Buch nicht nur gut ist. Es ist für mich das Buch, nach dem ich lebenslang gesucht habe. Es öffnet in erste Linie die Augen auf die Geschehnisse die uns Tag täglich umgeben. Es wirkt ernüchternd und oft hat man acha Momente. Der Autor wickelt nicht in schöne spirituelle Sätze die uns in Schlaraffenland bringen soll, es werden Fakten gesammelt und präsentiert in eine scharfe wissenschaftlich gesehen sachliche Wahrheit. Es ist das zweite mal das ich das Werk für Kindle gekauft habe, da ich gerne rescheschiere und meine Büchersammlung immer dabei haben möchte.

Encyclopedic reference about computer networks

This is a truly masterpiece about computer networks. Despite its title "for network design", the authors not only cover network design aspects, but also provide a very solid reference about many important topics in computer networks, including:

1) Transport networks (SONET, and optical networks).

2) LAN, WAN technologies and routing protocols.

3) QoS including MPLS.

4) Network devices and interconnections...and many more.

The book is very well organized, with very useful tips and highlights about key words and topics included in each section. Lots of useful diagrams and graphics, and pretty much space (1000+ pages) to cover almost every detail.

I personally recommend this title as a textbook for an in depth two-semester course in computer networks, though it is flexible enough to fit courses of different length and duration, both for undergraudates or graduates. It may also be a solid bookshelf reference for computer networks professionals.

Pay attention to the acommpanion site (very simple look, lots of useful graphics and complementary material).

This book covers a good variety of networking topics. The book is kind of technical and offers some details about network protocols. However, I have found some mistakes in the literature and some outdated information which should be corrected in upcoming versions. It is also difficult to read.
